For the scientific journal, see Genetics (journal) For a generally accessible and less technical introduction to the topic, see Introduction to genetics DNA , the molecular basis for inheritance. Each strand of DNA is a chain of nucleotides , matching each other in the center to form what look like rungs on a twisted ladder. Genetics , a discipline of biology , is the science of heredity and variation in living organisms Knowledge of the inheritance of characteristics has been implicitly used since prehistoric times for improving crop plants and animals through selective breeding . However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the mechanisms of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century. Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that inheritance is fundamentally a discrete process where specific traits are inherited in an independent manner—these basic units of inheritance are now called genes Genes correspond to regions within DNA , a molecule composed of a chain of four different types of nucleotides —the sequence of these nucleotides is the genetic information organisms inherit. DNA naturally occurs in a double stranded form, with nucleotides on each strand complementary to each other. Each strand can act as a template for

10. Kids Genetics @ GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline explains how researchers are working to understand the genetic base of common diseases in order to discover and develop new medicines.
Genetics is about storing and passing on messages. Genetic messages are stored in your DNA, which is inside almost every cell in your body. DNA tells cells what they're supposed to do, when, where and how - to keep your body working well. Scientists are working to understand the genetic messages that make some people respond to medicines differently than others and make some people more prone to certain diseases than others. They use this knowledge to make new medicines to help people live healthier lives.

Department of Genetics The Ph.D. program in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine provides opportunities for graduate study in all major areas of modern genetics, including identification and analysis of human disease genes, molecular evolution, gene therapy, statistical genetics, application of model organisms to problems in biology and medicine, and computational and experimental approaches to genome biology. The Department also includes the Stanford Human Genome Center , the , the Saccharomyces Genome Database ( SGD ), the Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base ( PharmGKB ), the Tetrahymena Genome Database ( TGD ), the Candida Genome Database ( CGD ), and the Stanford Microarray Database ( SMD ); together, these provide resources and opportunities the biomedical researchers and for large-scale and/or high-throughput approaches to biomedical research. The Stanford at The Tech (ST project provides graduate students and post-doctoral fellows an opportunity to learn how to present science to the public at The Tech Museum of San Jose. A Master's of Science Program in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling will begin at Stanford University in the fall of 2008. 'Long-life' genes found in 100-year-old humans
Gene variants have been identified in centenarians that may help explain their longevity, as well as their shorter stature EXPERT GUIDE Instant Expert: Genetics
No field of science has changed more, or changed the world more, in the last 50 years than genetics - the study of how our physical and behavioural traits are inherited The field's crowning achievement may have been the spelling out of our genetic secrets by the human genome project , but scientific and technological advances in genetics have forever transformed agriculture biology medicine zoology , and even fields such as anthropology and forensic science Why certain features of parents and even more distant relatives appear or do not appear in individual people, plants, parasites and protozoa has fascinated and confused people for millennia. This observation has also spawned a remarkable variety of theories of heredity , from pangenesis to Lamarckism . Modern genetics, however, can trace its lineage to pea plants in the garden of an Augustinian monk

Welcome to the Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School. Reflecting the breadth of the field itself, the Department of Genetics consists of faculty working on diverse problems using a variety of approaches and model organisms, unified in their focus on the genome as an organizing principle for understanding biological phenomena. Genetics is not perceived simply as a subject, but rather as a way of viewing and approaching biological phenomenon. While the range of current efforts can best be appreciated by reading the research interests of individual faculty the scope of the work conducted in the Department includes (but is by no means limited to) human genetics of both single gene disorders and complex traits, development of genomic technology, cancer biology, developmental biology, signal transduction, cell biological problems, stem cell biology, computational genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, epigenetics, evolutionary biology, and plant biology. The mission of the Department encompasses research and education while serving as a focal point for drawing together and integrating basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is strongly committed to supporting its current community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and to securing the best new scientists, setting its sight on new research opportunities in the future.
