The faculty of the Immunology Graduate Group (IGG) are drawn from eight different units of the University of Pennsylvania, encompassing a broad spectrum of research interests: The College of Arts and Sciences The School of Medicine the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Children's Hospital of Philadelphia ... the Wistar Institute ; and the Institute for Cancer Research. The IGG has also established a partnership with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The partnership brings to the IGG the extraordinary resources and scientific expertise present at the NIH, one of the largest and most renowned biomedical research centers in the world. Students have the opportunity to interact with NIH faculty in a variety of ways, including conducting a lab rotation or thesis work at the NIH. This cross-departmental and institutional organization fosters a unique collaborative environment that allows students to develop research projects combining the expertise of multiple faculty members.

General Immunology
Host defense is present in many forms. Overall, the Immune Response (IR) can be divided into two major classifications; humoral and cell-mediated. While these responses are not mutually exclusive, they provide distinctly different avenues for dealing with pathogenic organisms or altered host cells. These different responses will be discussed in more detail later. Immune Response Humoral Immunity Cell-mediated Immunity (Antibody) (Cytotoxicity) Some of these responses are specific, others are non-specific. This page will introduce host defense mechanisms by defining some commonly used terms and describing the specific cells and tissues involved in these immune responses. DEFINITIONS: Antigen (Ag): A molecule which elicits a specific immune response when introduced into an animal. More specifically, antigenic (immunogenic) substances are:
  • Structurally complex (proteins are usually very antigenic),
  • Accessible (the immune system must be able to contact the molecule), and
  • Foreign (not recognizable as "self"). Antibody (Ab): A glycoprotein produced in response to an antigen that is specific for the antigen and binds to it via non-covalent interactions. The term "immunoglobulin" is often used interchangeably with "antibody". We will use the term "immunoglobulin" to describe

The Program in Immunology, administered through the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School, is one of the four offered interdisciplinary programs leading to the Ph.D. degree in medical sciences through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University. The program, based at Harvard Medical School, is an interdepartmental, multidisciplinary degree program. It operates on the principle that scientists working in modern immunology must also have a general knowledge of biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology to work creatively in their field. Students take a core curriculum (four courses), but the remainder of the course selections vary according to the direction and interests of the students. The first year is occupied primarily by course work, seminars, and laboratory rotations. Students generally select a dissertation advisor after the first year of study. The dissertation investigation usually takes three to four years. The program has members from the Departments of Medicine, Pathology, Genetics and Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine. It offers a wide range of areas for education and research in the rapidly growing field of immunology, including immunochemistry, molecular immunology, cellular immunology, tumor immunology, cell activation, allergic inflammation, immunogenetics, and immune deficiency. Courses may be chosen from the offerings of all faculties of Harvard as well as from those of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    AIMS AND SCOPE
The great advances in immunology in recent years make this field one of the most rapidly growing in biological sciences. This remarkable growth is stimulated by the influx of investigators from other disciplines such as biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and by an increased number of investigators who came to immunology through the more traditional routes of microbiology and various medical disciplines. As a consequence, immunology has become a vast and rich field encompassing outlooks that range from the highly clinical to the highly molecular. Although such perspectives may appear diverse, they are, in fact, highly interdependent. Critical Reviews TM in Immunology presents a balanced overview of contemporary immunology and melds together molecular immunology and immunobiology.
