About the Department
Undergraduate Studies We offer the only B.S. degree in Microbiology in Oregon, training about 130 majors. 95% of graduates are employed in their field or are engaged in further studies (graduate or professional, particularly medicine and allied fields) 3 months after graduation.
Graduate Studies
We train about 30 graduate students earning M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
Research
We conduct research on a broad range of subjects covering viruses, bacteria and parasites and their roles in the health of the environment and humans, animals and plants. Our research serves the missions of the College of Agricultural Sciences and the College of Science and we work closely with scientists in local biotechnology companies.

Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to conduct the best possible research and provide the most rigorous and inspiring training in the areas of microbiology, immunology, host-pathogen interaction and related fields. Through such activities, our goal is to improve human and animal health as well as to improve our ability to be responsible stewards of a fragile earth. Through this website, we hope to present an overview of our research and training activities and to inspire like-minded individuals to join us in our quest. about us The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a community of over 200 individuals, all of whom share a common passion for research and learning. We have over 25 faculty among our ranks, ~50 graduate students, over 100 post-doctoral fellows, ~25 research, administrative and support staff and ~25 undergraduate and medical students working in labs. About 40% of our faculty have an M.D. and 70% a Ph.D. with most also holding joint appointments in other departments in the School. The Department was founded almost 100 years ago and has gone by a number of names since that time, each reflecting a particular stage in the evolution of medicine and the life sciences. Our current name was granted by the University in 1987 when the Department made a major push to expand its focus into the complex interplay between microbe and host. This is a unifying theme that permeates the Department’s research and teaching and that only seems to be growing in relevance with each passing year.

Description
Veterinary Microbiology is ranked 4th in the Veterinary Sciences ISI Category with an Impact Factor of 2.073.
Veterinary Microbiology is concerned with microbial (bacterial, fungal, viral) diseases of domesticated animals (livestock, companion animals, fur-bearing animals, game, poultry, fish) that supply food, other useful products or companionship. In addition, Microbial diseases of wild animals living in captivity, or as members of the feral fauna will also be considered if the infections are of interest because of their interrelation with humans (zoonoses) and/or domestic animals, or for comparative or other scientific reasons. Studies of antimicrobial resistance are also included.
Original research papers of high quality and novelty on aspects of control, diagnosis, epidemiology, host response, immunology, molecular biology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of microbial diseases of animals are published. Drug trial papers are accepted if they have general application or significance. Papers on the identification of microorganisms are also accepted, but detailed taxonomic studies do not fall within the scope of the journal. Case reports are usually not accepted, unless these have general application or contain novel aspects. Papers of geographically limited interest, which repeat what had been established elsewhere will not be accepted. The readership of the journal is global.

Autumn What the Heck is Microbiology?
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms - little, really little, critters (except for The Big One ). And, please take a look at some relative sizes of different living cells at Jim Sullivan's Page: Cells Alive! Bacteria are absolutely necessary for all life on this planet - for every known ecosystem - including the human ecosystem! Without bacteria, there would be no life, as we call life, on the earth. However, it is a good thing that most bacteria die-out. Here is why: bacteria are single-cell organisms, that produce more of their kind by cell-division, alone. So, if one begins with a single bacterial cell like E. coli for example, in 20 minutes there will be two, and 20 minutes later, four, etc., E. coli cells. At this rate, even though most bacteria are several hundred-times smaller than we can see with our naked eye (never seen a clothed eye), in only 43 hours, from that one cell at the beginning, there would be enough E. coli to occupy the entire volume of the earth (1,090,000,000,000,000,000,000 cubic meters)! In only about two additional hours, these bacteria would weigh as much as the earth - 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons!
