Molecular biology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry , particularly genetics and biochemistry . Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell , including the interactions between DNA RNA and protein biosynthesis and learning how these interactions are regulated. Writing in Nature William Astbury described molecular biology as: "... not so much a technique as an approach, an approach from the viewpoint of the so-called basic sciences with the leading idea of searching below the large-scale manifestations of classical biology for the corresponding molecular plan. It is concerned particularly with the forms of biological molecules and ..... is predominantly three-dimensional and structural - which does not mean, however, that it is merely a refinement of morphology - it must at the same time inquire into genesis and function."

Mullis, at the Cetus Corporation, who was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize for chemistry for PCR, is a technique to exponentially amplify in vitro a small quantity of a specific nucleotide sequence in the presence of template sequence, two oligonucleotide primers that hybridize to opposite strands and flank the region of interest in the target DNA, a thermostable (taq) DNA polymerase. The reaction is cycled involving template denaturation, primer annealing, and the extension of the annealed primers by DNA polymerase until enough copies are made for further analysis. The Brown University Graduate Program in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry (MCB) was organized in 1976 to bring together faculty who recognized the emergence of common conceptual and experimental aspects of investigation in biochemistry, genetics, virology, immunology, pathology, and cellular, developmental and molecular biology. It is truly an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental Program. Our Program offers students of superior ability and motivation excellent preparation for a career that includes research in biology and medical sciences. The Program is designed to provide the student with a firm background in research encompassing biochemistry and cellular, developmental and molecular biology.

Molecular biology, and genetherapy an introduction Dr. A. Vincent Thamburaj. N eurosurgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai , India. Molecular strategies are currently being either used or sought for brain tumors, stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, vascular malformations, spinal degenerative diseases, and congenital malformations of the central nervous system. Many of these patients have been treated for neurological diseases for which conventional medical therapies have been of limited utility. These methods include commonly used techniques such as advanced cytogenetics, differential display, microarray technology, molecular cell imaging, yeast two-hybrid assays, gene therapy, and stem cell utilization.
Of late, there is increasing interest in use of molecular strategies in brain tumors. The neuro-oncologist of the next century will be a molecular biologist. This may result in brain mind manipulation including the manipulation of learning, memory and several types of emotions.
    MOLECULAR BIOLOGY:
The cancer viruses were discovered in 1911, but largely ignored for several decades. They came into focus again in 1950s.The central task was to isolate them and prepare vaccines for immunization. However it became problematic because viruses seemed to play an etiological role in just a handful of human cancers.

Molecular Modeling Pro Update Link / Bad Link? Molecular Modeling Pro has most of the advanced features available in expensive PC-based molecular modeling programs and more! Molecules are easily constructed with your mouse and pull-down menus. The program can display molecules as wire frame, ball and stick, spheres and dot surface models. Up to 2,500 atoms and 10 molecules can be displayed on the screen at a time and minimized using the MOLY minimizer. Over 70 physical properties can be calculated instantaneously including molecular weight, volume, length, width, surface area, density, dipole moment, Hansens 3-D solubility parameters, HLB, boiling point, vapor pressure, Log P and connectivity indices. With Molecular Modeling Pro you can perform stoichiometry on reactions, balance equations, and draw reaction mixtures with arrows and conditions. Submitted Dec 23, 2000

Feb. 03 Furthermore, it is increasingly possible to use the elements of the cell, to the extent that - in a new field called synthetic biology - gene regulation systems, artificial biomolecules and nanoparticles can be developed and applied within the cells. The Faculty of Applied Sciences' new Bionanoscience department will explore the full spectrum from nanoscience to cell biology to synthetic biology, and as such will naturally and strategically complement the activities of the existing Nanoscience and Biotechnology departments.
