DNA and RNA Purification Description: The SYBR Green Extract-N-Amp Tissue PCR Kit contains all the reagents needed for rapid extraction, amplification and detection of genomic DNA from mouse tails and other animal tissues, buccal swabs, hair shafts, and saliva.
  • Novel Fast Convenient
Procedure: DNA is rapidly extracted from a tissue by incubating the sample with a mixture of the Extraction Solution and the Tissue Preparation Solution at room temperature for 10 minutes. After a 3-minute heat denaturing step, an equal volume of Neutralization Solution B is added to the extract to neutralize inhibitory substances. The extract is ready for real-time PCR in any plate-based real-time thermal cycling system in less than
15 minutes! Application: Ideal for genotyping, gene copy number experiments, and amplifying and quantifying DNA from multiple tissue sample types.

Molecular Biology is the basic science that seeks an understanding of life processes in terms of the properties and functions of molecules that make up living cells. The scope of questions addressed in Molecular Biology ranges from evolution to development to the regulation of gene expression. A career in molecular biology requires a strong background in biology as well as in chemistry, mathematics and physics. The Molecular Biology Major has been designed for three groups of students: (a) those who plan to enter a research career in molecular biology or related areas such as biochemistry, genetics, oncology, microbiology, cell biology or developmental biology; (b) pre-professional students who plan to enter either a research or clinical career in medicine or allied health fields; and (c) students who plan to teach secondary-school science. Students with other interests are also welcome, of course. To obtain information about the program or to declare a Molecular Biology Major, stop by the Molecular Biology Major office, located in 445 Henry Mall, room 118. Advisors are assigned through the program office and are located in many related departments throughout campus. Molecular biology advisors are especially competent to provide counsel regarding the major and career opportunities in molecular biology.

Molecular Biology
Learn about macromolecules, lipids, proteins and other molecular components of the cell. Protein Function Proteins are very important molecules in our cells. Each protein within the body has a specific function. Diffusion, Passive Transport, and Osmosis Diffusion is the tendency of molecules to spread into an available space. Without other outside forces at work, substances will move/diffuse from a more concentrated environment to a less concentrated environment. Macromolecules An introduction to macromolecules and molecular diversity. Carbohydrates An introduction to the structure and function of carbohydrates. Lipids Lipids are very diverse in both their respective structures and functions. Examples of lipids include fats, phospholipids and steroids. Nucleic Acids Nucleic acids allow organisms to transfer genetic information from one generation to the next. Proteins Proteins are very important molecules in cells. They have many diverse functions and all are typically constructed from one set of 20 amino acids.

Jump to: navigation search Molecular biology is the scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. This branch of biology deals with the nature of biological phenomena at the molecular level through the study of DNA and RNA proteins , and other macromolecules involved in genetic information and cell function, characteristically making use of advanced tools and techniques of separation, manipulation, imaging, and analysis.
The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1950 W. T. Astbury of the Univ. of Leeds used the term in its now accepted sense, to describe the area of research, closely related to and often overlapping biochemistry , conducted by biologists whose approach to and interest in biology are principally at the molecular level of organization. The field of molecular biology has grown with the increasing sophistication of available techniques and has quickly built upon its own increases in the understanding of biological processes. In the 1930s, with the help of the technique of ultracentrifugation, the macromolecules were first studied in detail and their crystalline properties described. In the 1940s the process by which individual genes produce their unique products began to be understood as resulting from the different sequences of the base pairs that make up the genes.
