"to talk about the nature (of things)") is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of living organisms Physiology has traditionally been divided between plant physiology and animal physiology but the principles of physiology are universal, no matter what particular organism is being studied. For example, what is learned about the physiology of yeast cells may also apply to human cells. The field of animal physiology extends the tools and methods of human physiology to non-human animal species . Plant physiology also borrows techniques from both fields. Its scope of subjects is at least as diverse as the tree of life itself. Due to this diversity of subjects, research in animal physiology tends to concentrate on understanding how physiological traits changed throughout the evolutionary history of animals. Other major branches of scientific study that have grown out of physiology research include

2004 Nobel Prize to:
  • Richard Axel
  • Linda B. Buck
4 October 2004 The 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Richard Axel and Linda B. Buck for discoveries concerning "odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system." Axel is University Professor at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons and Buck is currently a Member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Their work has increased our understanding of the sense of smell in mammals, including the diversity of odorant receptors and the mechanisms by which we experience one of our most complex senses in an orderly fashion. In many mammals, there are about one thousand odorant receptor molecules, each a member of the same family of membrane proteins but distinct in their odorant specificity. Axel and Buck identified this gene familyforming about three percent of the genomeand found that each olfactory receptor cell in the nasal epithelium expresses only one of the thousand genes. Each receptor responds to a selective set of odors, and combinations of receptor activity account for our ability to sense many distinct odors. Additional work by Axel and Buck showed that these genes also control connections the sensory cells make on neural way stationsthe glomeruliwhich display similar specificity.

What's New March 3, 2008 The advance online edition of Tree Physiology Volume 28, No. 5 (May) was published today. January 18, 2008 In 2006, the most recent year for which data are available, Tree Physiology topped the list of the World's 69 forestry-related journals as determined by the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) Indicator The SJR Indicator, considered by its creators to be a measure of journal prestige , is computed with an algorithm based on that used to determine Google Web page rankings. The computation of rank takes account of not only the number of citations to each article published by a journal in the previous two years but also the ranking of the citing journals. Tree Physiology was ranked first among forestry journals by the SJR Indicator in five of seven years to 2006. SCImago is a research project based at the University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcala de Henares, and dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualization techniques.
