    Hide Sociobiology Like Sex?
Self-interest goes a very long way to explaining human behavior. Yet when we educate our young, we prefer to bias them, focusing their attention on the virtues of undiscriminate altruism. Why? In Friday's issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education David Barash accepted (temporarily un-gated version here ) Nietzsche’s claim that “society encourages self-sacrifice because the unselfish sucker is an asset to others,” and Freud’s complaint that [Education] does not prepare [children] for the aggressiveness of which they are destined to become the objects. In sending the young into life with such a false psychological orientation, education is behaving as though one were to equip people starting on a Polar expedition with summer clothing and maps of the Italian Lakes. Nevertheless, Barash prefers that we discuss self-interest as we do sex: too little too late: The teaching of sociobiology (or evolutionary psychology) should be undertaken only with great caution. The renowned primatologist Sarah Hrdy … questioned "whether sociobiology should be taught at the high-school level ... ... The whole message of sociobiology is oriented toward the success of the individual. ... Unless a student has a moral framework already in place, we could be producing social monsters by teaching this." ... Preferable, I submit, is to structure the teaching of sociobiology along the lines of sex education: Teach what we know, but do so in age-appropriate stages. Just as we would not bombard kindergartners with the details of condom use, we probably ought not instruct preteens in the finer points of sociobiology.

SUSTAINER PROGRAM FEEDBACK CUSTOMIZE November 20, 2005 The Testosterone Threat: Where Sociobiology Meets National Security By Betsy Hartmann Continuing son preference and the widespread practice of sex-selective abortion of female fetuses in India and China are leading to ever more skewed sex ratios in those populations. This is certainly an extremely serious problem with many negative ramifications, especially for women and girls. But does it pose a threat to national and global security? This is what Valerie M. Hudson and Andrea M den Boer argue in their book Bare Branches: The Security Implications of Asia's Surplus Male Population. Recently released in paperback by MIT press, the book has circulated widely in academic and policy circles and its arguments have attracted the attention of media pundits as well as the CIA. "Women's issues, so long ignored in security studies, could well become a central focus of security scholars in the twenty-first century," the authors write. But precisely how will they become a focus? If Bare Branches is any indication, there is cause for concern. The book not only reinforces deeply problematic gender stereotypes, but grounds much of its analysis in sociobiological explanations of difference. These in turn help to naturalize broader social and economic inequalities and pathologize migration and political resistance. Bare Branches goes even further than youth bulge theory in embracing sociobiological assumptions about men. Male human reproductive behavior is presented as a link on an evolutionary chain that includes not only monkeys but song birds. Testosterone 'T' levels tell all. Because T levels are ostensibly lower in married men than bare branches, "the larger the number of men who are unable to marry, the higher their circulating T, and the greater amount of violent and antisocial behavior they will exhibit." (Interestingly, the authors avoid talking about violence within marriage). The authors also confidently pronounce that low-status males commit more violence than high-status ones. (What about Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, or for that matter, Osama bin Laden, scion of a rich Saudi family?) In support of this statement, they cite a study where unemployed males had the highest T levels among males categorized according to occupation.

    Sociobiology
Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Sociobiology , a developing scientific field that investigates the biological bases of the social behavior of animals, such as aggression territoriality , social systems, and mate selection. Sociobiology seeks to extend the concept of natural selection to social systems and social behavior of animals, including humans. Sociobiologists believe that behavior patterns come into being, are modified, and even disappear through the process of natural selection. Because of the efforts of some prominent sociobiologists to extend such analyses to the complex behavior of humans, sociobiology initially aroused a great deal of controversy. Those opposed to this perspective on the origins of human behavior consider sociobiology a purveyor of biological determinism and, in effect, a supporter of existing social systems; sociobiologists dispute such charges, and subsequent research has suggested a high degree of innate control in certain aspects of human behavior, such as language acquisition, mate choice, gestural communication, incest avoidance, and some personality and cognitive traits. The work of sociobiologists has been most successful in helping to understand the evolution of the behavior patterns of social insects, patterns that are hard to account for in terms of the survival of individual animals alone.

Samuel Butler, or Sociobiology for Grown-Ups
By Horatio Morpurgo May 2006 "It were unwise to be sanguine and unphilosophical to despair" – John Playfair, 1814. In an essay of 1888, with the novels on which his reputation rests both completed, Samuel Butler reflected on how he might describe himself. "Philosophical writer" was the best fit, he concluded, even if any close reader of Butler will agree it was a rather loose fit. His best known intellectual progeny are as various and contrasting as you might expect from a talent which itself eludes any simple definition. Saul Bellow’s Herzog recalls the portraiture etched with acid in Butler’s autobiographical novel The Way of All Flesh and Bellow himself has acknowledged the influence of his

    Articles About Real Science
Yes, I still do some research scholarly papers on evolution, communication, astronomy and exobiology... whether or not humanity is likely to be alone in the cosmos.... Though I've lapsed from doing very much science these days, I still try to maintain my "union card" by producing a scholarly paper or two. Here are some of those accessible by Internet.
    SETI SEARCH INTENSIFIES:
Did you think that SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) was benign and scientific, as portrayed in the movie CONTACT? Well that was back in the 20th Century, when the programs, aims and goals were open and scientific. Alas, things have been gradually changing in the cult-ridden 21st Century. See of how a small and inward-looking community of radio astronomers aim to gamble with all of human posterity, based on a few questionable assumptions... without ever openly discussing their intention with colleagues or the world at-large.
Indeed, the world is taking notice. A recent editorial in NATURE presented a capsule summary of the problem and the very openminded and vigorously fun Seti League (not to be confused with the Seti Institute) has posted a pdf version online . Let there be no confusion. The request that is on the table for a wide-open and broad-based discussion of this important issue at some prestigious and eclectic venue like (say) the AAAS is one that no reasonable person or group would refuse. Will such an open discussion take place? Allowing all perspectives to be heard and examined?
