Welcome to the database of insect primary types in the collection of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. This online database contains records for primary types in the entomology collections of the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ). The MCZ insect type collection, one of the largest in North America, currently preserves the primary types of more than 28,000 species, representing 29 orders, 565 families, and 7,578 genera. In addition to such information as type label data, type stage and status, current species name (if available), the database includes high resolution images of the type specimens. Otophryne robusta frog in Venezuela The Division of Vertebrate Zoology comprises four departments: Herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), Ichthyology (fishes), Mammalogy (mammals, including primates), and Ornithology (birds). Each Department maintains separate collections, curators, and support staff, but the Departments collaborate on issues including policy and recruitment, collection databasing, and library and archives management. The Departments also share a common skeleton preparation laboratory (supervised by the Department of Mammalogy) and a molecular systematics laboratory (supervised by the Department of Ornithology).
Painted ringtail (Pseudochirulus forbesi) in Papua New Guinea The Division currently hosts approximately a dozen Ph.D. students enrolled in joint programs with Columbia University and the City University of New York. These students typically complete their coursework at their home university and conduct dissertation research at the Museum under the direction of Division curators. Postdoctoral researchers, typically supported for two years of study, pursue their own research projects using Division collections and Museum laboratory facilities. BACK TO TOP
Black-eared shrike babbler (Pteruthius melanotis) in Vietnam The Division of Vertebrate Zoology houses one of the largest collections of vertebrate animals in the world. It has approximately 3.5 million specimens, which range from whales to bats, catfish to coelacanths, rattlesnakes to treefrogs, and hummingbirds to ostriches. Most specimens are preserved in alcohol, or as dry skins or skeletons. The Division also maintains collections of approximately 15,000 tissue samples for DNA and other genetic and biochemical analyses.

What themes unify invertebrate zoology? Invertebrate biologists study many aspects of the biology of animals without backbones, a large field of study as it includes at least 95 percent of all animal species. How diverse is the field of invertebrate zoology? The topics investigated by invertebrate biologists range from the molecular to the ecological level of study. Thus, studies on invertebrates might include field work, laboratory work or a mixture of both. Invertebrates may be found and studied in all conceivable habitats - freshwater, marine, high and low latitudes, hot rift vents, deserts, mountaintops and the Antarctic. Why is your field exciting?

  • Levels of organization in animal complexity Protoplasmic grade of organization
unicellular organisms such as protozoa, unicellular algae, bacteria, and unicellular fungi. Cellular grade
aggregation of cells that are functionally differentiated. Division of labor is evident (e.g. reproduction vs. vegetative growth); protozoan colonies, colonial unicellular algae such as Volvox spp., and some lower invertebrates such as metazoans (sponges). Cell-tissue grade
aggregation of similar cells into definite patterns or layers, thus becoming a tissue (e.g. jellyfish). Tissue-organ grade
aggregation of tissues into organs (e.g. flatworms). Organ-system grade

Profile
With six years of tedious phd work on theropod dinosaurs behind him, Darren Naish stares longingly from his office window at the birds outside and wonders: why did I bother? He pursues exotic lizards and feral cats across the British countryside, occasionally prizes the skeletal jaws from hedgehog corpses, and aims to publish his technical work on obscure Cretaceous dinosaurs. He remains desperately in quest of an academic job that'll last more than a month, and - with a background in TV research, e-learning development, academic editing, popular writing, teaching, landscape gardening, parenting and the wonderful world of retail - he still holds out hope of becoming a dedicated academic. He can be contacted intermittently at eotyrannus (at) gmail dot com. For more biographical info go here
