by Henry Adams Table of Contents Chapter XXII. Chicago (1893) DRIFTING in the dead-water of the fin-de-siecle and during this last decade every one talked, and seemed to feel fin-de-siecle where not a breath stirred the idle air of education or fretted the mental torpor of self-content, one lived alone. Adams had long ceased going into society. For years he had not dined out of his own house, and in public his face was as unknown as that of an extinct statesman. He had often noticed that six months' oblivion amounts to newspaper-death, and that resurrection is rare. Nothing is easier, if a man wants it, than rest, profound as the grave. In February, 1893, Senator Cameron took his family to South Carolina, where he had bought an old plantation at Coffin's Point on St. Helena Island, and Adams, as one of the family, was taken, with the rest, to open the new experience. From there he went on to Havana, and came back to Coffin's Point to linger till near April. In May the Senator took his family to Chicago to see the Exposition, and Adams went with them. Early in June, all sailed for England together, and at last, in the middle of July, all found themselves in Switzerland, at Prangins, Chamounix, and Zermatt. On July 22 they drove across the Furka Pass and went down by rail to Lucerne. Months of close contact teach character, if character has interest; and to Adams the Cameron type had keen interest, ever since it had shipwrecked his career in the person of President Grant. Perhaps it owed life to Scotch blood; perhaps to the blood of Adam and Eve, the primitive strain of man; perhaps only to the blood of the cottager working against the blood of the townsman; but whatever it was, one liked it for its simplicity. The Pennsylvania mind, as minds go, was not complex; it reasoned little and never talked; but in practical matters it was the steadiest of all American types; perhaps the most efficient; certainly the safest.

Henry J. Adams, a partisan on the free-state side during the Bleeding Kansas era, was born in New York in 1816. He briefly attended Oberlin College in Ohio, but about 1840 he assumed a public school teaching position in Cincinnati, where he also read law, graduated from the Cincinnati Law School, and was admitted to the bar. In March 1855 Adams made the move to Kansas Territory, soon taking up residence in Leavenworth, and becoming deeply involved in the political struggles of is new home. He was elected under the Topeka Constitution to the first free-state legislature and was among the members of the Leavenworth party taken prisoner by Kickapoo rangers. Subsequently, Adams, who was considered a good orator, became the first free-state mayor of Leavenworth in spring 1857, chaired a committee of the 1858 legislature to investigate election fraud, was a delegate to the Leavenworth Constitutional Convention, and was nominated and elected governor under the Leavenworth Constitution in 1858. He narrowly missed nomination as Republican delegate to Congress in 1858 and was second only to Charles Robinson in support among Republican delegates for the gubernatorial nomination in 1859. In 1861, he was sent to Washington, D. C., as a delegate to the U.S. Peace Conference, and in 1868 he became a judge. After his 1870 death in Waterville, Marshall County, a biographer wrote that Adams "will not soon be forgotten by any of the thousands who knew him well as one of the purest and noblest of the men of Kansas."

Henry Adams
Henry Adams Henry Adams, a son of Charles Francis Adams and Abigail Brooks, was born in the family home on Mount Vernon Street, just below the State House. High expectations were held of this descendant of President John Adams and President John Quincy Adams. After graduating from Harvard College in 1858, he went to Berlin to study civil law. When he found that he was learning little, he moved to Dresden and traveled in Austria and Italy as well as Germany. In 1860, when his father was in Washington serving as a congressman from Massachusetts, he accepted the invitation to be private secretary to his father, and he continued in that role when his father was appointed United States Minister to Great Britain. This was the son’s distinctive introduction to the art of diplomacy. In returning to Washington in 1868, Adams became a political journalist writing articles for

Born in Boston into one of the country's most prominent families (both his great-grandfather and his grandfather had been Presidents of the United States), Adams, after his graduation from Harvard in 1858, embarked on a Grand Tour of Europe, during which he also attended lectures in civil law at the University of Berlin.
In 1861 his father, Charles Francis Adams, was appointed minister to England by Lincoln, and Henry Adams accompanied him as his private secretary. In 1868 he returned to the United States and settled down in Washington, D.C., where he started working as a journalist. Adams saw himself as a traditionalist longing for the democratic ideal of the 17th and 18th centuries. Accordingly, he was keen on exposing political corruption in his journalistic pieces.
In 1870 Adams was appointed Professor of Mediaeval History at Harvard, a position he held until his early retirement in 1877, aged only 39. That year he returned to Washington, where he continued working as a historian. In the 1880s Adams also wrote two novels: Democracy was published anonymously in 1880 and immediately became popular. (Only after Adams's death did his publisher reveal Adams's authorship.) His other novel, published under the nom de plume of Frances Snow Compton, was Esther (1884).
In 1885 Marian Adams, his wife, committed suicide. Upon her death Adams took up a restless life as a globetrotter, travelling extensively and, for years, spending summers in Paris and winters in Washington. In 1907 he published his Pulitzer Prize winning autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams.

The Education is much more a record of Adams's introspection than of his deeds. It is an extended meditation on the social, technological, political, and intellectual changes that occurred over Adams's lifetime. Adams concluded that his traditional education failed to help him come to terms with these rapid changes; hence his need for self-education. The organizing thread of the book is how the "proper" schooling and other aspects of his youth, was time wasted; thus his search for self-education through experiences, friendships, and reading. zurück ANB Kontakt var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Henry Clay: National Socialist Henry Clay was a lifelong promoter of central banking and participated in a pitched political battle with President Andrew Jackson over the rechartering of the Bank of the United States in battle that Jackson won. But Speaker of the House Clay saw to it that branch banks were opened in his home state of Kentucky and were managed by his political cronies there, enabling them to reward their political supporters with cheap credit. American Renaissance
In the history of architecture, the American Renaissance was the period ca 1880 - 1914 (often thought to have begun with the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge), characterized by renewed national self-confidence and a feeling that the United States was the heir to Greek democracy, Roman law, and Renaissance humanism. The American preoccupation with national identity (or nationalism) in this period was expressed by modernism and technology as well as academic classicism.

Born: February 16, 1838, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States Died: March 27, 1918, in Washington D.C., United States Henry Brooks Adams established himself as a writer, a historian, and a philosopher of history. He was deemed a scholarly critic of events and ideas. Adams came from a long line of political influences. His father was Charles Francis Adams, an American statesman and minister to Great Britain; his grandfather was John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States; and his great-grandfather was John Adams, the second President of the United States. Adams' grandfather influenced his grandson's career by instilling in him a strong moral conscience and a respect for education, especially in literary works. After a primary education at Boston Latin School and Epes Dixwell School, Adams attended Harvard from 1854 to 1858. He then went to Europe to study civil law at the University of Berlin, but ended up traveling Europe, becoming a student of languages and cultures of the Old World. On his return from Europe, Adams did some legal studies in Quincy, Massachusetts before becoming a private secretary to his father.
