The Joseph Bucklin Society. . A National Center for History of the Gaspee Affair of 1772.
In this section Samuel Adams, born in Boston in 1722; died in Boston in 1803. Samuel and John Adams were cousins and not brothers. They were sometimes referred to, both inside and outside Boston, as the Adams' brothers, or simply as the Adams'. Samuel Adams was born in Boston, son of a merchant and brewer. He was an excellent politician, an unsuccessful brewer, and a poor businessman. After his early education at Harvard, his early public office was as a tax collector for the English taxes. However, he made good use of his understanding of the tax codes and wide acquaintance with the merchants of Boston to assist the resistance to the taxes. Samuel was a very visible popular leader who, along with John, spend a great deal of time in the public eye agitating for resistance. In 1765 he was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly where he served as clerk for many years. In 1776, as a delegate to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence. Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, Adams was appointed to the United States Naval Academy from the state's second Congressional district in 1931, and graduated in 1935 with an appointment to the rank of Ensign.
Adams was then assigned to sea duty on battleships, serving aboard the West Virginia in June and July of 1935, immediately reassigned to the Tennessee until January 2, 1938. He was then accepted to flight school at NAS Pensacola, where he earned his flight wings on January 17, 1939.
Soon promoted to Lieutenant (j.g.), Adams was then assigned to aircraft carrier duty, first aboard the USS Saratoga for one month (April-May 1939) and then with the Fifth Bomb Squadron (VB 5) aboard the Yorktown, from May 13, 1939 to the end of his career. While with Yorktown Adams flew Northrop BT-1s, later transitioning with the rest of the squadron to the SBD Dauntless aircraft, flying escort for North Atlantic convoys until U.S. entry to the war.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Yorktown was sent to the Pacific theater, and Adams took part in raids in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. He led raids on land and sea targets in and around Jaluit on February 1, 1942, against shipping off New Guinea on March 10, and on the island of Tulagi on May 4. He participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 7 and 8. During this period Adams was twice awarded the Navy Cross.

... Genealogy.Net SAMUEL T. ADAMS Our subject was born here November 8th, 1837. After the demise of his parents he and his sister were put under the superintendence of guardians and received each a good education. At the age of nineteen he began farming on the old homestead. When twenty-two, he chose as a life companion Miss Agnes, the daughter of Wm. North, an old settler, and one of the first merchants in Boles township. He located on his present premises, about two miles southwest of Gray's Summit, in 1866 a fine location, handsomely improved, a view of which has been contributed to our lithographic department. Mr. Adams is a large land owner, and is well circumstanced, and is known in business circles as a gentleman in every way responsible. The soil in each of his farms is rich, to say the least. In 1876 a field of thirty-five acres, where he lives, averaged seventy bushels of corn to the acre which we note down as a comment on the character of the lands of this section of the county. He has two sons, one now about grown, on whom he is conferring all the advantages of a thorough education, believing that knowledge is power, and the best patrimony that can be left to children.

Samuel A. Adams March 10, 1839 - July 19, 1920 Samuel Adams was born in Vermont to Abraham and Miranda (nee Bartlett) Adams. However, the Census records indicate that his parents relocated to Wisconsin in the 1840s. In fact, the obituary on Samuel Adams mentions that he came to Sheboygan (Wisconsin) with his parents when he was six years old which would have been about 1845 based on his birth year. Although that obituary indicates that Samuel Adams came with his family to Sheboygan, the Adams family must have then re-settled in Forest Township, Fond du Lac County, possibly as early as 1847. The 1847 Territorial Census for Forest Township lists an A. Adams family consisting of 3 males and 4 females. The 1850 Federal Census for Forest Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin shows an Abraham (41) and Miranda (34) living with six children: Samuel (10), Amelia "Emily" (10), Mortimer (8), Helen (5), Emory (3) and Noble (1). The 1860 Federal Census for Forest Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin lists an Abram (57) and Miranda (43) Adams with ten children: Samuel (21), Emily (19), Mortimer (17), Emory (15), Helen (12), Noble (10), David (8), Frances E. (5), Eugene (3) and Arthur (6 months). The 1870 Federal Census for Forest County, Wisconsin indicates that Miranda Adams (53) is widowed living with the following children: Noble (20), David (18), Frank (15), Eugene (13), Ernest (10) and Delysle (8). An 1862 plat map of Forest Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin shows an A. Adams owning 80 acres in Section 13 of that township. A. Adams may have been for Abraham Adams and that acreage was probably the location of the Adams family when they were enumerated in the 1850 Census and the 1860 Census for Forest Township.*

Jump to: navigation search ADAMS, Samuel , was one of the most remarkable men connected with the American revolution . He was descended from a family that had been among the early planters of New England , was born in Boston September 27th, 1722, was educated at Harvard college , and received its honors in 1740. When he took the degree of master, in 1743, he proposed the following question; " Whether it be lawful to resist the supreme magistrate ,if the commonwealth cannot be otherwise preserved ?" He maintained the affirmative, and this collegiate exercise furnished a very significant index to his subsequent political career. On leaving the university, he engaged in the study of divinity, with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but did not pursue his design . From his earliest youth, his attention was drawn to political affairs, and he occupied himself, both in conversation and writing, with the political concerns of the day. He was opposed to governor Shirley , because he thought too much power was conferred upon him, and was the friend of his successor, Pownal, as the latter assumed the popular side. He became so entirely a public man, and discovered such a jealous, watchful and unyielding regard for popular rights, that he excited the general attention of the patriotic party, and they took the opportunity, in the year 1766, to place him in the legislature. From that

Adams, Samuel Adams, Samuel (1722-1803), American patriot, one of the leaders of resistance to British policy in Massachusetts before the American War of Independence. Adams decisively influenced every important aspect of the prerevolutionary struggle against British rule. In the realm of practical politics, he promoted the formation of the Boston chapter of the Sons of Liberty and sponsored the Committee of Correspondence of Boston. He led the fight against the Townshend Acts, headed the demonstrations that led to the Boston Massacre, directed the Boston Tea Party, and figured significantly in other outstanding events of the period. He rapidly acquired an intercolonial reputation both through these activities and as a literary agitator and revolutionary ideologist. Many of his writings, chiefly political pamphlets, were widely circulated and read. A proponent of the natural rights of man, he was in the vanguard of those Americans who challenged the authority of the British Parliament and championed rebellion. Stylistically, his writings are lucid, forceful, and epigrammatic. Adams' contributions to the Gazette
