Ainsworth was the son of a Manchester solicitor and it was intended that he would follow his father's profession, but in 1824 he went to London, where he moved into the publishing and literary world. He had his first big success with the novel Rookwood (1834), which caught his readers' imagination with the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin . In all, Ainsworth published 41 novels, including Jack Sheppard The Tower of London Old St Paul's, A Tale of the Plague and the Fire (1841), and Windsor Castle (1843), the latter based on the legend of Herne the Hunter. Ainsworth gave the public a new taste for historical fiction by his ability not just to tell a story, but to create a world around it which was both colourful and cruel. He also edited and published
