He is best known for his entomological descriptions, which remain in standard use, and for his demonstration of the operation of natural selection in animal mimicry , which lent substantial support to the theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin Born in Leicester, Bates worked as a clerk at a brewery in Burton upon Trent, and developed an early interest in entomology. In 1844 he introduced the subject to his friend Alfred Russel Wallace , who in 1847 suggested that they travel together to the tropical jungle of South America to collect specimens for sale in Britain and to amass data that might throw light on the problem of the origin of species. They arrived at Bel©m, Brazil, in May 1848. For four years they explored the

Bates, Henry Walter Bates, Henry Walter , (1825-1892), British naturalist and explorer. Bates held the post of Assistant Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society (the first holder of the position to be paid) from 1864 until his death. His other writings include further papers on entomology and the two-volume work The Naturalist on the River Amazons (1863), which is full of wonderful observations of flora, fauna, and the human inhabitants of the area. Bates was born in Leicester, England, and was at first apprenticed to a hosier. From earliest youth, however, he was an enthusiastic naturalist, and he published his first scientific paper at the age of 18. In 1844 Bates met naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace , best known for his development of a theory of evolution based on natural selection, contemporaneously with the British naturalist

Enzyklop¤dieartikel In diesem Artikel suchen Druckerfreundliche Version der Seite Versenden Bates, Henry Walter (1825-1892), britischer Naturforscher und Reisender. Der am 8. Februar 1825 in Leicester geborene Bates bereiste 1848 zusammen mit dem britischen Zoologen und Forschungsreisenden A. R. Wallace Brasilien und das Amazonas gebiet, dem seine besondere Aufmerksamkeit galt. Bis 1859 erkundete er das Gebiet, aus dem er nahezu 15 000 Insekten zur¼ckbrachte. Davon waren der Wissenschaft bis dahin 8 000 Exemplare noch unbekannt. Ab 1864 war Bates Sekret¤r der Royal Geographical Society in London. 1863 schrieb er seine Erfahrungen am Amazonas in The Amazonas (Elf Jahre am Amazonas) nieder. Er starb am 16. Februar 1892 in London.
