Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Thomas Hart Benton Biography Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 - January 19, 1975, also Tom Benton) was an American muralist of the Regionalist school. His cartoon-like paintings showed everyday scenes of the contemporary Midwest, especially bucolic images of pre-industrial farmlands.
Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri into an influential clan of politicians and powerbrokers. Benton's father was a lawyer and US congressman; his great-uncle was 19th-century statesman Senator Thomas Hart Benton, after whom he was named. Benton spent his childhood shuttling between Washington D.C. and Missouri. Benton rebelled against his grooming for a future political career, preferring to develop his interest in art. As a teenager, he worked as a cartoonist for the Joplin American newspaper.
In 1907 Benton enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago, but left for Paris in 1909 to continue his art education at the Académie Julian. In Paris Benton met other North American artists such as Diego Rivera and Stanton Macdonald Wright, an advocate of Synchronism. Wright's influence gave a strong Synchronist leaning to Benton's work.
Benton returned to New York City in 1913 and continued painting. His work as a draftsman in the United States Navy in 1919 changed his style significantly. His artwork during his navy stint concentrated on realistic sketches and drawings of shipyard work and life a change of focus that would continue throughout Benton's career.

Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri, and named after his granduncle, the famed pre-American Civil War senator. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and then spent three years in Paris. Living in New York City after 1912, Benton turned away from modernism and gradually developed a rugged naturalism that affirmed traditional rural values. By the 1930s he was riding a tide of popular acclaim along with his fellow regionalists Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry . Benton’s masterpiece, the mural

An integrated mural project.
Integration makes sense when the connections make sense. In our caser the connections were obvious. The science teacher and I were both teaching responsibility to the environment and ecological issues. As teachers, we decided we wanted our units to mesh and create a lasting memory for students. We also believe that integrated programs develop team spirit and improve student attitudes and work habits.
The science component consisted of an ecology unit that led students to realize the importance of environmental awareness with a focus on preservation of water. Science students collected and tested water samples from nearby creeks, recorded and analyzed data, and toured the wastewater treatment plant. They also kept a nature journal that included their findings as well as their individual thoughts about environmental issues.
Within the art component, students studied environmental art, discussed public works, wrote critically about them, and created their artworks. Smithson's Spiral Jetty and works by Christo were looked at and talked about as well as murals by Wyland, Picasso, and Thomas Hart Benton. Public art and aesthetic debates were held with questions asked such as, "What is public art?" "How is public art different than other art?" "Is graffiti art?" and "Should all public art have a message?"

Breaking the ice
Originally I was at a crossroads on what subject matter to discuss but while surfing through a few channels one weekend day I came upon a film starring Ed Harris as a famous yet unfamiliar artist to me, Jackson Pollock http://www.sonyclassics.com/pollock/ Iâm sure to most people, watching a film during the weekend seems a mundane act but not to a resident of the Northeast this year like myself. Robbed of activity I feel a general lack of stimulation which in some way might have led to my interest in Pollock the artist. Seemingly , Jackson Pollock was an artist who suffered from such an affliction. I guess you can say I could see how a man could go stir crazy or drive himself to drink in the manner in which Pollock did after this winter. Public and critics opinion alike of his work were very important to Jackson Pollock, he struck me as a sensitive man who yearned for recoginition therefore I can only imagine how touched he was when Abstract Expressionist and contemporary rival

6. Overview of Art and Design
OBJECTIVE: To help the student to see art as an integral part of culture. To see that it is a record of who we are at the moment, that it not only reflects our culture, but that it is a part of it as well.
It's hard to know where to start. Well, how about at the beginning. When I look at the cave dweller's artwork, I am astounded at the beauty of their use of line and detail. The detail isn't everywhere; it's just used enough to let us know exactly what kind of animal we are looking at. They were concerned with the image itself, and it's meaning, as opposed to making a "picture" as a whole. We don't really know why they were making those images, and maybe they didn't know why themselves. They may have just felt the impulse to record their life, their daily interest, work, hunt, fear, food. Scholars think it was "magical" or "religious". The truth is, nobody knows. Just by looking at a little of their work, i Maybe they weren't. Maybe these powerful images speak more to us than anything else could about their world and how they might have lived. They become a "tool" for our understanding. Art and design is the tool for how we understand the history of ourselves for thousands of years. If you ever wonder "what use is art anyway?" I hope you can remember this. Until there was writing, art and design WAS history....it WAS us. It still is. It reflects the times in which we live. In fact, writing actually IS art. Writing actually came from a system of picture-symbols.
