William Blake
William Blake was born in London, the son of a hosier, and was educated at home by his mother. After working initially as an engraver, he turned to painting and poetry, illustrating and hand colouring his own works. Always a non-conformist free spirit, his poetry is often elaborately symbolic, mysterious, and spiritual. He married Catherine Boucher in 1782, lived most of his life in straightened circumstances, died in 1827 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Bunhill Fields public cemetary. Although probably admired more for his drawing during his lifetime, he has come to be regarded as one of the greatest English poets since his death. The Tiger

William Blake 1757- 1827
At the age of ten, William Blake is reputed to have seen a tree filled with angels on Peckham Rye, so perhaps it's not surprising that the word most often associated with this extraordinary poet and artist is visionary. In his own lifetime, and for a good while afterwards, he was regarded as gifted but mad. The son of a London hosier, Blake received little in the way of a formal education, although he did study at the Royal Academy of Art after completing his apprenticeship to an engraver, a trade he pursued with considerable skill. He began writing his own verse and evolving what was finally to become a highly distinctive personal mythology, whilst engraving for numerous London Booksellers and a circle of supportive patrons. (Blake intended all of his poems to be read with the, now celebrated, illustrations he prepared for them.) His debut, Poetical Sketches

Early Career
Blake was born at 28 Broad Street, Golden Square, London, England into a middle-class family. His artistic talent was noticed and encouraged from an early age. At ten years old, he began engraving copies of drawings of Greek antiquities, a practice that was then preferred to real-life drawing. Four years later he became apprenticed to an engraver, Henry Basire. After two years Basire sent him to copy art from the Gothic churches in London. At the age of twenty-one Blake finished his apprenticeship and set up as a professional engraver.
In 1779 he became a student at the Royal Academy, where he rebelled against what he regarded as the unfinished style of fashionable painters such as Rubens. He preferred the Classical exactness of Michelangelo and Raphael.
In 1782 Blake met John Flaxman, who was to become his patron. In the same year he married a poor illiterate girl named Catherine Boucher, who was five years his junior. Catherine could neither read nor write and even signed her wedding contract with an X. Blake taught her reading and writing and even trained her as an engraver. At that time, George Cumberland, one of the founders of the National Gallery, became an admirer of Blake's work.
Blake also became a friend of the painter John Henry Fuseli.

Art books and other products for artists to buy online Artist Names Blake, William William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter and engraver who was born in London. William Blake engraved and illustrated his books of poetry including ‘Songs of Innocence’ (1789), ‘Songs of Experience’ (1794), ‘Milton’ (1808), and ‘Jerusalem’ (1820). All were influenced by his unorthodox Christian and political beliefs. William Blake’s watercolours for the ‘Book of Job’ (1826) and Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’ (1827) were inspired by his visions, gothic sculpture and engravings after Michelangelo and Blake was a precursor of Romanticism. William Blake: The Complete Illuminated Books As poet and artist William Blake invented a method of printing that enabled him to create works in which words and images combine to form pages uniquely rich in content and beautiful in form.

BLAKE, William (1757-1827)
As one of the most curious and significant figures in the history od English literature, Blake is renown as a poet, Mystic , painter and engraver. With these talents he influenced both literature and graphic arts. His Mystical abilities appeared in childhood when he began experiencing visions of Angels and spiritual monks, later on these visions included the Angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary, and other historical figures. It might be thought, as so often happens, that his parents would have discouraged him from these thoughts, but they did not.
His parents and relatives were of humble people. Although Blake is a common Irish name, the family's ancestry is dubious. Later the poet W. B. Yeats , an ardent devotee of Blake and editor of his literary works, would have it believed that Blake came directly from Irish ancestry, but this is contradicted by Martin J. Blake in his genealogical work, Blake Family Records
Blake, born in London, spent most of his life there. Since his parents knew of his early visions they offered to help him to become a painter. Blake was attracted to the position but generously pointer out that such an apprenticeship would be costly, and such an expense would not be fair to his other brothers and sisters, since his father's income as a hosier was not a large one. He entered the apprenticeship as an engraver, not just that the training was less expensive, but also because the profession was likely to yield a faster return.

JERUSALEM (from 'Milton')
AND did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land. Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge THE TIGER TIGER, tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of thine eyes? ;On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire? And what shoulder and what art Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And, when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand and what dread feet?

Blake as Artist As was to become his custom, Blake illustrated the Songs with designs that demand an imaginative reading of the complicated dialogue between word and picture. His precise method of illuminated printing is not known. The most likely explanation is that he wrote the words and drew the pictures for each poem on a copper plate, using some liquid impervious to acid, which, when applied, left the text and illustration in relief. Ink or colour wash was then applied, and the printed picture was finished by hand in watercolours. Blake has been called a pre-Romantic because he rejected Neo-Classical literary style and modes of thought. His favourite tenet was that “all things exist in the human imagination alone”. He loathed Isaac Newton and John Locke—both heroes of the Enlightenment—and in his painting, too, he shunned 18th-century conventions. His style made great use of the line: in repudiation of the painterly academic style, Blake referred back to the medieval tomb statuary he copied as an apprentice. It is perhaps this insistence on strong linear patterning in his work that attracted some of the artists in the Art Nouveau movement to his work at the end of the 19th century. The influence of Michelangelo also is identifiable in Blake’s radical foreshortening and exaggerated muscular form in one of his best-known illustrations, popularly known as
