EMILY BRONTE QUOTES A person who has not done one half his day's work by ten o'clock, runs a chance of leaving the other half undone. EMILY BRONTE, Wuthering Heights
Vain are the thousand creeds
That move men's hearts: unutterably vain;
Worthless as withered weeds,
Or idlest froth amid the boundless main.
EMILY BRONTE, Last Lines I am now quite cured of seeking pleasure in society, be it country or town. A sensible man ought to find sufficient company in himself. EMILY BRONTE, Wuthering Heights Honest people don't hide their deeds. EMILY BRONTE, Wuthering Heights Any relic of the dead is precious, if they were valued living. EMILY BRONTE, Wuthering Heights
Though earth and man were gone,
And suns and universes ceased to be,
And Thou wert left alone,
Every existence would exist in Thee.
Let grief distract the sufferer's breast,
And night obscure his way;
They hasten him to endless rest,
And everlasting day.

Bronte Country Emily Brontë (1818 Brontë is not the original family name of the Rev. Patrick and his clan. Patrick Brontë was born in 1777 in Ireland under the name of Brunty (or Prunty). For obvious reasons he changed his name. Brontë is hardly a very English name, although it sounds somewhat similar to his native Brunty Emily Brontë was born at Thornton in Bradford (in Yorkshire) in 1818. When she was two years of age her parents moved to Haworth, a small village where her father became the curate. Emily was one of five girls and had one brother, Branwell. Her two elder sisters died in a boarding school as a result of neglect. Her mother died when she was only three The children had very little parental guidance and were largely left to amuse themselves, living on the wild Yorkshire moors with little or no social contact. Their Aunt Branwell took over their c a re shortly after their mother’s death. The children will not hove derived much comfort and affection from her since she was an orderly woman whose main concern was simply to educate, feed and keep the children spiritually ‘clean’. They did not receive much warmth from their elders except from Tabby, a local woman who acted as servant. She appears to have been their only warm adult companion, giving them the affection all human beings desire, and caring for them till the last one died. In fact, if we knew more of Tabby it might be possible to draw a parallel between her and the Nelly Dean figure who is always so concerned with the welfare of her charges

Emily Bronte
Emily Bronte was sister to Anne and Charlotte Bronte. Also in the family was their brother Branwell (1817-1848) and two sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, who both died in childhood. The family moved to Haworth, now part of Keighley, in 1820 when their father, Patrick Bronte (1777-1861), became Rector there. After their mother died from cancer her sister came to look after the children. Their childhood, spent in the sole companionship of one another on the wild Yorkshire moors of England, was happy. The children invented two fantasy worlds, Gondal and Angria , about which they wrote stories and poems. Her single novel, Wuthering Heights , is an intense and powerful story of love and revenge set in the remote and wild moors of 18 th century Yorkshire. Poems Wuthering Heights

Emily was educated at a nearby Clergy Daughters' School. Shielded from the outside world by their strict upbringing and remote location, the sisters created an imaginary fantasy world together which finds expression in the romantic and at times melodramatic style of Emily's writing. Her most famous novel, Wuthering Heights , is regarded as a natural classic and her poetry, although not prolific, has a highly elemental and melancholy flavour. She died of tuberculosis at the early age of 30, unmindful of her future fame. My Lady's Grave

By Emily Bronte Stanzas I'll not weep that thou art going to leave me,
There's nothing lovely here;
And doubly will the dark world grieve me,
While thy heart suffers there. I'll not weep, because the summer's glory
Must always end in gloom;
And, follow out the happiest story
It closes with a tomb! And I am weary of the anguish
Increasing winters bear;
Weary to watch the spirit languish
Through years of dead despair. So, if a tear, when thou art dying, Should haply fall from me, It is but that my soul is sighing, To go and rest with thee. -THE END- [Ellis Bell] Emily Bronte's poem: Stanzas

    Wuthering Heights, first published in 1847, the year before the author's death at the age of thirty, endures today as perhaps the most powerful and intensely original novel in the English language. "Only Emily Bront," V.S. Pritchett said about the author and her contemporaries, "exposes her imagination to the dark spirit." And Virginia Woolf wrote, "It is as if she could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognisable transparencies with such a gust of life that they transcend reality. Hers, then, is the rarest of all powers. She could free life from its dependence on facts, with few touches indicate the spirit of a face so that it needs no body; by speaking of the moor make the wind blow and the thunder roar."
    This Modern Library edition contains a biographical note and preface by the author's sister Charlotte Bront, and an Introduction by Diane Johnson.
