Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)
Burke was a hugely influential Anglo-Irish politician, orator and political thinker, notable for his strong support for the American Revolution and his fierce opposition to the French Revolution. Edmund Burke was born in Dublin on 12 January 1729, the son of a solicitor. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin and then went to London to study law. He quickly gave this up and after a visit to Europe settled in London, concentrating on a literary and political career. He became an MP in 1765. He was closely involved in debates over limits to the power of the king, pressing for parliamentary control of royal patronage and expenditure. Britain's imposition on America of measures including the Stamp Act in 1765 provoked violent colonial opposition. Burke argued that British policy had been inflexible and called for more pragmatism. He believed that government should be a co-operative relationship between rulers and subjects and that, while the past was important, a willingness to adapt to the inevitability of change could, hopefully, reaffirm traditional values under new circumstances.

Z Edmund Burke Biography Edmund Burke (January 12, 1729 - July 9, 1797) was an Irish philosopher and statesman, remembered principally for his criticism of the French Revolution and his discussion of "the sublime". He was a founder of the Annual Register and is regarded as the "father" of modern conservatism.
Respected as a magnificent orator throughout his 30 year parlimentary career, Burke was often, perhaps unfairly, accused of inconsistency. He defended the English Revolution of 1688, and yet attacked the French Revolution bitterly. He was infuriated at the notion that Britain should learn from the French experience and allow all citizens the vote, and argued that traditonal ruling practices in general and the monarchy in particular were essential elements of a stable, ordered society. Burke pitted the chaotic, uncontrollable changes of the French Revolution against (as he saw it) the British tradition of order and liberty. To Burke, the moral claim of the revolution to be in defence of the natural "rights of man" was a nonsense: although the British parliament depended on the approval of the British people for its authority to rule, this did not mean that citizens had the right to choose their rulers.
Burke was a ruthless critic, however, of the excesses of established government: he campaigned against the persecution of Catholics in Ireland, denounced the East India Company and had the governor-general of Bengal impeached, and even expressed sympathy for the American Revolution. For Burke, there was no inconsistency in these views: it was the duty of citizens to submit to traditional authority, but it was equally the duty of rulers to act wisely and fairly. His strong criticism of the excesses of British rule in Ireland, India and America was not motivated by any wish to support the notion of natural rights; on the contrary, he argued, it was simple pragmatism: by ruling in a way that was manifestly unfair and exploitative, traditional authorities risked formenting the worst of all possible outcomes, popular revolution.

Burke, Edmund Burke, Edmund (1729-1797), Irish-born British statesman and political philosopher, renowned both for his brilliant oratory and his critique of the French Revolution. Burke was born in Dublin (city, Republic of Ireland) and educated at Trinity College. He studied law briefly in London, entering London cultural life. His first important work was A Vindication of Natural Society (1756), a satire ridiculing the reasoning of the British statesman Henry St John Bolingbroke. This work, published anonymously, attracted considerable attention, as did his essay, A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1756). In 1757 he began a 30-year career as founder editor of The Annual Register , a British political yearbook. In 1761 Burke became private secretary to the chief secretary for Ireland, William Hamilton. Four years later he became private secretary to Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd marquess of Rockingham prime minister (1765-1766), a position he held until Rockingham's death in 1782, and in 1766 he was elected to Parliament as Whig member for the pocket borough of Wendover. Almost immediately Burke sought repeal of the Stamp Act. In a pamphlet, Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), which was read throughout Europe, confirmed him as the most eloquent defender of the established order. He especially criticized the Revolutionary ideology, and its elevation of abstract principle above painstaking social evolution. He regarded the social order as essentially a product of natural law, and distrusted rationalism's qualifications to comment on and modify that order. Burke became more and more vehement in his denunciation of the French Revolution as time went on and the atrocities of the Terror grew worse. Burke retired from Parliament in 1794. Though he had never made a single comprehensive formulation of his thought, his ideas became the basis of modern British political conservatism.
