POEMS BY JOHN BURROUGHS: BURROUGHS, JOHN . Born in Roxbury, New York, April 3, 1837; [died March 29, 1921]. Considered in his day the foremost naturalist of America, Mr. Burroughs was also one of the foremost men of letters and had the distinction of having been one of the first to recognize and proclaim the genius of Walt Whitman . As a naturalist Mr. Burroughs long maintained supremacy in his field, and the many volumes which record his observations are valuable not only for the accuracy of their information, but for the philosophy deduced from a lifelong association with nature. In poetry, he is chiefly known for the lyric "Waiting," written in his youth. RELATED LINKS

John Burroughs
John Burroughs, the Hudson River naturalist, wrote more than 28 books during his lifetime. A popular national figure, he held court at Slabsides, his cabin in the Catskills. Henry James described him as a "more sociable Thoreau." During the Gilded Age, Burroughs' essay on the natural world attracted a wide following. He made friends with the leading men of his day, including Oscar Wilde and Thomas Edison, and accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on a trip to Yellowstone Park. In 1900 Burroughs published two books, The Light of Day and Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers , a series of essays on skunks, weasels, wild mice and possums. At 63, he thought nothing of scaling a 30-foot hickory tree to observe at close hand a flying squirrel his dog had treed.

Biographical Note
John Burroughs (1837-1921) is one of most important contributors to the canon of American nature writing and was one of the most well-known essayists of his time. He published widely on a variety of subjects in many popular publications, received numerous awards and honorary degrees and was well known to scholars and laypeople alike. However, his popularity waned after his death and only recently has interest in his work been rekindled. His work is of significance to those studying not just natural history, but also ecology, philosophy, poetry, geography, history and many other areas.

Summary:
from the BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Nature chose the spring of the year for the time of John Burroughs's birth. A little before the day when the wake-robin shows itself, that the observer might be on hand for the sight, he was born in Roxbury, Delaware County, New York, on the western borders of the Catskill Mountains; the precise date was April 3, 1837. Until 1863 he remained in the country about his native place, working on his father's farm, getting his schooling in the district school and neighboring academies, and taking his turn also as teacher. As he himself has hinted, the originality, freshness, and wholesomeness of his writings are probably due in great measure to the unliterary surroundings of his early life, which allowed his mind to form itself on unconventional lines, and to the later companionships with unlettered men, which kept him in touch with the sturdy simplicities of life. From the very beginnings of his taste for literature, the essay was his favorite form. Dr. Johnson was the prophet of his youth, but he soon transferred his allegiance to Emerson, who for many years remained his "master enchanter." To cure himself of too close an imitation of the Concord seer, which showed itself in his first magazine article, Expression, he took to writing his sketches of nature, and about this time he fell in with the writings of Thoreau, which doubtless confirmed and encouraged him in this direction. But of all authors and of all men, Walt Whitman, in his personality and as a literary force, seems to have made the profoundest impression upon Mr. Burroughs, though doubtless Emerson had a greater influence on his style of writing.

American History Quotes Quotes by Famous Americans Past and Present John Burroughs Quotes Click here for John Burroughs books John Burroughs' America: Selections from the Writings of the Naturalist "The truths of naturalism do not satisfy the moral and religious nature." "Nature teaches more than she preaches. There are no sermons in stones. It is easier to get a spark out of a stone than a moral." "Every day is a Sabbath to me. All pure water is holy water, and this earth is a celestial abode." "Under the old dispensation, before the advent of science, when this little world was all, and the sun, moon, and stars were merely fixtures overhead to give light and warmth, the conception of a being adequate to create and control it all was easier." "Science has fairly turned us out of our comfortable little anthropomorphic notion of things into the great out-of-doors of the universe. We must and will get used to the chill, yea, to the cosmic chill, if need be. Our religious instincts will be all the hardier for it." "Hence when the man of science says, 'There is no God,' he only gives voice to the feeling of the inadequacy of the old anthropomorphic conception, in the presence of the astounding facts of the universe."
