Campanella dissented from the teaching of his time, and in 1599 was arrested on charges of heresy and of conspiring against the Spanish government in Naples. He spent the next 27 years in prison in Naples, where he wrote Civitas Solis (City of the Sun, 1623), a description of an ideal society modelled on the Republic of Plato . He was released from prison in 1626, but renewed persecution compelled him to seek refuge in France. Many of the tenets of his philosophy were similar to the views of the French philosopher Ren© Descartes and the later German philosopher Immanuel Kant . Campanella's works, 82 in all, cover many different philosophical subjects. Among his treatises are

Tommaso Campanella De rerum natura iuxta propria principia . Nel 1589 passò a Napoli, ospite del marchese Mario del Tufo, dove conobbe Giambattista Della Porta ; nel 1591 pubblicava la sua prima opera, la Philosophia sensibus demostrata , apologia del pensiero telesiano. Le sue idee innovative - appoggiò la teoria copernicana Galilei Inquisizione Bruno ), torturato e costretto ad abiurare alcune tesi della Philosophia eresia e cripto- protestantesimo fingendosi pazzo. Fu allora incarcerato nelle prigioni di Castelnuovo a Napoli, dove rimase fino al 1626. Pur imprigionato, non smise mai di partecipare alla vita culturale e religiosa del tempo: nel 1616 difese Galilei ( Apologia pro Galileo ). Riuscì a persuadere Urbano VIII della propria conversione, e per questo gli furono concessi la libertà e un sussidio; ma il suo atteggiamento filo-francese insospettì gli Spagnoli, che chiesero il suo arresto (1634). Egli fuggì allora a Parigi, dove rimase fino alla morte.
