Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400)
Chaucer was the first great poet writing in English, whose best-known work is 'The Canterbury Tales'. Geoffrey Chaucer was born between 1340 and 1345, probably in London. His father was a prosperous wine merchant. We do not know any details of his early life and education. In 1357, he was a page to Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster, wife of King Edward III's third son. Chaucer was captured by the French during the Brittany expedition of 1359, but was ransomed by the king. Edward III later sent him on diplomatic missions to France, Genoa and Florence. His travels exposed him to the work of authors such as Dante, Boccaccio and Froissart. Around 1366 Chaucer married Philippa Roet, a lady-in-waiting in the queen's household. They are thought to have had three or four children. Philippa's sister, Katherine Swynford, later became the third wife of John of Gaunt, the king's fourth son and Chaucer's patron.

Geoffrey Chaucer 1344-1400
The son of a London wine merchant, Geoffrey Chaucer was the first great poet in the language. Dryden called him, 'the father of English poetry.' He was buried in Westminster Abbey in what became known in his wake as Poet's Corner. A customs officer, courtier and diplomat, Chaucer enjoyed the patronage of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster (a major character in Shakespeare's Richard II ) and he prospered under the reigns of Edward III, Richard II and Henry IV. In royal service he travelled widely through France and Italy and his verse shows the tremendous influence of continental poetry, especially the work of Boccaccio, whose

Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1344-1400)
Geoffrey Chaucer was born in London, the son of a vintner. After studying law at the Inner Temple, he was employed by the Duke of Clarence as a page and served in the army in France during the Hundred Years War, when he was captured and ransomed. He then entered the service of Edward III and held various positions at court, going on missions to Italy, France, and Flanders. He was appointed a customs officer at the port of London and in 1385 he retired to Kent where he became a Justice of the Peace and a knight of the shire. Chaucer is indisputably the first great English poet. His early work is strongly influenced by French and Italian culture and his later masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales , has a charm, vitality, humour, and wisdom which render it highly readable six centuries later. His work is also significant as a reference point in the evolution of the English language. The Love Unfeigned

Significance Chaucer greatly increased the prestige of English as a literary language, using it at a time when much court poetry was still written in Latin or Anglo-Norman, and extended the range of its poetic vocabulary and metres. He was the first English poet to use the iambic pentameter, the seven-line stanza called rhyme royal, and the couplet later called heroic. His system of versification depends on sounding many e 's in final syllables that are silent (or absent) in modern English. Nevertheless, Chaucer dominated the works of his 15th-century English followers and the so-called Scottish Chaucerians. For the Renaissance, he was the English Homer. Edmund Spenser paid tribute to him as his master; many of the plays of William Shakespeare show thorough assimilation of Chaucer's comic spirit. John Dryden, who modernized several of the Canterbury tales, called Chaucer the “father of English poetry”. Since the founding of the Chaucer Society in England in 1868, which led to the publication of the first reliable editions and translation into modern English of his works, Chaucer's reputation has been securely established as a great English poet, loved for his wisdom, humour, and humanity.
