Bill Clinton (1946- )
42nd President of the United States (1993 - 2001) 42nd President of the United States whose second term in office was dominated by scandal. William Jefferson Clinton was born on 19 August 1946 in Hope, Arkansas. His father died before he was born and his mother remarried a man whose surname Clinton took. He studied international affairs at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and then spent two years at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1970, Clinton returned to the US to take a scholarship at Yale University Law School. While at Yale he met and married fellow student Hillary Rodham. In 1973 began to teach law at the University of Arkansas Law School, then resigned to run unsuccesfully for Congress. In 1976 he won his first political post, running for Arkansas Attorney General. Two years later he won the state governorship but failed to be re-elected in 1980. However, he ran again successfully in 1982 and served in the post for a decade. In 1992, he was selected as Democrat candidate for the presidency and won, defeating the incumbent President, George Bush, and the independent candidate Ross Perot. Clinton's first term was blighted when his party lost control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 1994 mid-term elections. He recovered, however, to comfortably win re-election in 1996 by defeating the Republican, Bob Dole, thus becoming the first Democrat to win re-election since Franklin Roosevelt in 1936.

Like him or hate him and there were few, it seemed, who did not energetically embrace one position or the other it's no surprise that Bill Clinton emerged as the 1990s' most inescapable figure in the public arena. Being president of the United States didn't hurt at all, of course, and his larger-than-life persona, in both his big dreams and goals and his notorious, gossip-worthy escapades, seemed tailor-made for being played out on TV screens and the Internet the world over. As a result, even his hobbies received high-level attention, and had it not been for the twist of fate that made him a global leader, his abilities on saxophone would never have received the notice it did. Born William Jefferson Blythe IV in rural Arkansas in 1946, Clinton's father died shortly after his birth; he only took his stepfather's name some years later. Raised partially by his grandparents, his youth was that of many children, suffering in part from the effects of a stressful home life his stepfather was an alcoholic who could turn abusive but also with many bright spots, at home and in school. Besides his academic pursuits, he was involved in music, being the drum major in his high-school band. The saxophone turned out to be another great love, and it was this instrument that he came to be identified with over time. His pursuit was essentially that of the competent enthusiast, performed with love if not with any spectacular, noteworthy skill, but certainly a cut above most rank amateurs. He played with jazz combos and liked to perform jam sessions at political and fundraising events with whatever band happened to be there.

Clinton also worked in the Middle East to negotiate peace agreements between Arabs, including Palestinians, and Israelis. Secret negotiations between the nation of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) led to a historic declaration of peace in September 1993. Clinton arranged for the peace accord to be signed at the White House. This agreement paved the way for limited Palestinian self-rule in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. In July 1994 Clinton helped orchestrate a historic agreement between longtime enemies Israel and

1998-08-28 - Clinton and Lewinsky Washington DC White House Bill Clinton
Sex, morality in political discourse San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Aug. 28, 1998:
    By Donald H. Harrison
San Diego, CA (special) It was interesting to view President Bill Clinton's televised address concerning his relationship with Monica Lewinsky in juxtaposition with the second debate between California gubernatorial candidates Gray Davis and Dan Lungren two nights later. The President invoked both God and family in explaining his unwillingness to discuss the intimate details of what occurred between him and Lewinsky. In the Aug. 19 debate between Davis and Lungren, God and family were again summoned to the discoursebut, in this case, as allies for the making of public policy. Clinton's infidelity to his wife absorbs the public interest for at least two reasons. One, it is far easier to understand than the intricacies of foreign or domestic policy. Two, as comparatively simple as it is, it can have dramatic consequencesnot only for Clinton's presidency but on the national conscience. Perhaps even against our will, Clinton's debacle may force all of us to rethink the values with which we've grown comfortable. We are witnessing an evolving public debate over sexual moralityone which may call into question some of the old truisms, or possibly reinforce them.
