Born in Bardsey, England (near Leeds ), Congreve was educated in the law at Trinity College in Dublin Ireland ; there he met Jonathan Swift , who would be his friend for the remainder of his life. Upon graduation, he became a disciple of John Dryden William Congreve wrote some of the most popular English plays of the Restoration period of the late 17th and very early 18th centuries. By the age of thirty, he had written several notable plays, including Love for Love (premiered April 30 ) and The Way of the World (premiered Unfortunately, his career ended almost as soon as it began. Er war einer der wichtigsten Kom¶diendichter der Restaurations phase innerhalb der englischen Literatur und gilt als bedeutendster Vertreter der Sittenkom¶die (Comedy of manners). Congreve wurde am 10. Februar 1670 in Bardsey bei Leeds geboren. Nach seiner Ausbildung am Trinitiy College in Dublin studierte er in London Jura, gab dieses Studium aber schon bald wieder auf, um eine literarische Laufbahn einzuschlagen. 1692 ver¶ffentlichte er das Prosawerk Incognita; es folgten einige Gedichte. Durchschlagenden Erfolg aber hatte Congreve erst mit seinen Theaterst¼cken: Die Auff¼hrung der Kom¶die The Old Bachelor (Hagestolz) 1693 markiert den eigentlichen Beginn seiner literarischen Karriere. 1694 bzw. 1695 schuf er mit

Congreve was born in Bardsey, West Yorkshire , England (near Leeds ). His parents were William Congreve (1637–1708) and his wife, Mary ( n©e Browning; 1636?–1715); a sister was buried in London in 1672. He spent his childhood in Ireland, where his father, a Cavalier , had settled during the reign of Charles II . Congreve was educated at Trinity College in Dublin ; there he met Jonathan Swift , who would be his friend for the remainder of his life. Upon graduation, he matriculated in the Middle Temple in London to study law, but felt himself pulled toward literature, drama, and the fashionable life.
