William Cowper
William Cowper (pronounced Cooper /'ku:pə(r)/) ( november 26 april 25 Date of birth is given in new style (Gregorian calendar). Old Style date is november 15 Encyclopedia Britannica was an English poet and hymnodist . One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. He suffered from periods of severe depression , and although he found refuge in a fervent evangelical christianity , the source of his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and fears that he was doomed to eternal damnation . However, his religious motivations and association with john newton (who wrote the hymn " amazing grace ") led to much of the poetry for which he is best remembered in the popular mind.
Life of Cowper
He was born in berkhamsted hertfordshire england . After education at westminster school , he was articled to Mr. Chapman, solicitor , of ely place holborn , in order to be trained for a career in law. During this time, he spent his leisure at the home of his uncle Ashley Cowper, and there fell in love with his cousin Theodora, whom he wished to marry. But as James Croft, who in first published the poems Cowper addressed to Theodora, wrote, "her father, from an idea that the union of persons so nearly related was improper, refused to accede to the wishes of his daughter and nephew." This refusal left Cowper distraught.

From LoveToKnow 1911
WILLIAM COWPER (1731-1800), English poet, was born in the rectory (now rebuilt) of Great Berkhampstead Hertfordshire , on the 26th of November (O.S. 15th) 1731, his father the Rev. John Cowper being rector of the parish as well as a chaplain to George II . On both the father's and the mother's side he was of ancient lineage. The father could trace his family back to the time of Edward IV . when the Cowpers were Sussex landowners, while his mother, Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk , was of the same race as the poet Donne, and the family claimed to have Plantagenet blood in its veins . Of more human interest were Cowper's immediate predecessors. His grandfather was that Spencer Cowper who, after being tried for his life on a charge of murder , lived to be a judge of the court of common pleas , while his elder brother became lord chancellor and Earl Cowper, a title which became extinct in 1905. Here is the poet's genealogical tree John Cooper Alderman of London (d. 1609). 1609). Sir William Cowper, Bart. (d. 1642). John Cowper (died in
