Oliver Twist
by
Charles Dickens
First published serially from 1837 to 1839 in Bentley's Miscellany and in a three-volume book in 1838. The novel was the first of the author's works to depict realistically the impoverished London underworld and to illustrate his belief that poverty leads to crime. Written shortly after adoption of the Poor Law of 1834, which halted government payments to the poor unless they entered workhouses, Oliver Twist used the tale of a friendless child, the foundling Oliver Twist, as a vehicle for social criticism. he novel is Victorian in its emotional appeal, it is decidedly unsentimental in its depiction of poverty and the criminal underworld, especially in its portrayal of the cruel Bill Sikes, who kills his kindly girlfriend Nancy for helping Oliver and who is himself accidentally hung by his own rope. 1 - Treats Of The Place Where Oliver Twist Was Born And Of The Circumstances Attending His Birth 2 - Treats Of Oliver Twist's Growth, Education, And Board 3 - Relates How Oliver Twist Was Very Near Getting A Place Which Would Not Have Been A Sinecure 4 - Oliver, Being Offered Another Place, Makes His First Entry Into Public Life ... 53 - And Last

The following is the beginning extract from a religious pamphlet about the
death of the signalman, killed by a train on Saturday, 9 August 18, saving
someone's life:
"On the borders of Berkshire and Surrey, about half-way between Guildford and
Reading, and within a short distance of the well-known Aldershot camp, is the
wayside railway station of Blackwater. The village itself is a small one
bordered by wide commons, which are profusely covered with rich purple heather,
and flanked by the extensive pine forests for which the district is so famous.
Few strangers, however, visit the village, apart from those who have business

CHARLES DICKENS QUOTES
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) English novelist I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies! CHARLES DICKENS, Bleak House Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. CHARLES DICKENS, Hard Times There are many pleasant fictions of the law in constant operation, but there is not one so pleasant or practically humorous as that which supposes every man to be of equal value in its impartial eye, and the benefits of all laws to be equally attainable by all men, without the smallest reference to the furniture of their pockets. CHARLES DICKENS, Nicholas Nickleby Grief never mended no broken bones. CHARLES DICKENS, Sketches by Boz Train up a fig-tree in the way it should go, and when you are old sit under the shade of it. CHARLES DICKENS, Dombey and Son Dignity, and even holiness too, sometimes, are more questions of coat and waistcoat than some people imagine. CHARLES DICKENS

Biographical note
19th Century English author, possibly second only to Shakespeare in lasting popularity. Much of his work dealt with the social issues of the day, and were influential in bringing about change. Many of his novels first appeared in serial form, making his output even more astonishing, because they were written to a deadline. More:

The Beginning of Dickens: Hampshire, England November 27, 2007 When I woke up, I whacked my head on the underside of a thatch roof. It was a deceptively hard surface. It was June, and I was in a little Hampshire cottage, having come to England for the first time to visit family. The mornings were bright, damp, and smelled of warm toast and clematis vines.

250TH ANNIVERSARY
The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

Charles Dickens
Like all of Dickens' major fiction, Martin Chuzzlewit , his sixth novel, was written for serial publication. Dickens counted on the payments to support his growing family. A standard monthly installment was thirty-two pages and contained two to three chapters. This novel on families and selfishness, which attacked American mores and institutions, enraged his overseas readers. As a friend wrote, "[Dickens] sent his humour and his art into the core of the vices of the time."
