George Eliot (1819-1880)
George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of the leading English novelists of the 19th century. Her novels, most famously 'Middlemarch', are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights. George Eliot was born on 22 November 1819 in rural Warwickshire. When her mother died in 1836, Eliot left school to help run her father's household. In 1841, she moved with her father to Coventry and lived with him until his death in 1849. Eliot then travelled in Europe, eventually settling in London. In 1850, Eliot began contributing to the 'Westminster Review', a leading journal for philosophical radicals, and later became its editor. She was now at the centre of a literary circle through which she met George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived until his death in 1878. Lewes was married and their relationship caused a scandal. Eliot was shunned by friends and family.

Z George Eliot Biography George Eliot was the pen name of English female novelist Mary Ann Evans (November 22, 1819 - December 22, 1880). Born on a farm near Nuneaton in Warwickshire, she used many of her real-life experiences in her books, which she wrote under a man's name in order to improve her chances of publication.
Eliot defied social conventions by living, unmarried, for many years with the already married George Henry Lewes, a writer, who died in 1878. On May 6, 1880 she married a friend, John Cross, an American banker, who was 20 years younger than Eliot. They honeymooned in Venice and, allegedly, Cross jumped from their hotel balcony into the Grand Canal on their wedding night; he survived. She died in London of a kidney ailment and was interred in Highgate Cemetery (East), Highgate, London, England.
Her works include:
Scenes of Clerical Life (1858)
Adam Bede (1859)
The Lifted Veil (1859)
The Mill on the Floss (1860)
Silas Marner (1861)
Romola (1863)
Brother Jacob (1864)

George Eliot
George Eliot was the pseudonym oh Mary Anne Evans, who was born in Arbury, Warwickshire where her father was a land agent. She was educated at schools in Nuneaton and Coventry and moved with her family to a suburb of Coventry on her father's retirement. Here she came under the influence of Charles Bray, a Coventry industrialist, and Charles Hennell who encouraged her to think for herself. After travelling abroad with the Brays she settled in London, becoming the assistant editor of the radical Westminster Review . She went to live with the journalist and critic George Henry Lewis in 1853, this arrangement being much frowned upon in these times. Two years after his death, she married a much younger man, John Walter Cross, but she died a few months later. Primarily a writer of popular novels ( Adam Bede The Mill on the Floss Silas Marner Middlemarch Daniel Deronda ), George Eliot wrote a considerable amount of poetry including The Spanish Gypsy , and the touching Brother and Sister . Both her prose and her poetry exhibit a freshness, honesty, and sensitivity and a great love of nature. None available.

Pessima ridens. Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name "George Eliot," a much over-rated English female writer whose ponderous works, with one or two exceptions, would probably not pass a publisher's reader at the present time, was born at Arbury farm, Chilvers Coton Parish, November 22, 1819. From the age of twelve to fifteen she attended a private girls' school. When her father retired in 1841, she went with him to Foleshill Road, Coventry, and there prepared a translation of Strauss' "Leben Jesu." From 1851 to 1853 she was assistant editor of the Westminster Review. In 1854 she met George Henry Lewes, the vivacious editor of The Leader. Lewes was already married, but according to English law, although his wife had twice eloped with other men, he was ineligible for divorce because he had forgiven her the first time. With him Mary Ann Evans lived until his death in 1878, and during these years most of her novels were produced. On May 6, 1880, she married John Walter Cross, twenty years her junior, and died December 22 of the same year. REFERENCES: J. W. Cross
