T. S. Eliot: Sweeny Among the Nightingales Journey of the Magi back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
Sweeny Among the Nightingales Apeneck Sweeny spreads his knees
Letting his arms hang down to laugh,
The zebra stripes along his jaw
Swelling to maculate giraffe. The circles of the stormy moon
Slide westward toward the River Plate,
Death and the Raven drift above
Gloomy Orion and the Dog
Are veiled; and hushed the shrunken seas;
The person in the Spanish cape
Tries to sit on Sweeny's knees Slips and pulls the table cloth Overturns a cofee-cup, Reorganised upon the floor She yawns and draws a stocking up; The silent man in mocha brown Sprawls at the window-sill and gapes; The waiter brings in oranges Bananas figs and hothouse grapes; The silent vertebrate in brown Contracts and concentrates, withdraws; Tears at the grapes with murderous paws; She and the lady in the cape Are suspect, thought to be in league; Therefore the man with heavy eyes Declines the gambit, shows fatigue

Eliot was born into a prominent Unitarian Saint Louis, Missouri family; his fifth cousin, Tom Eliot, was Chancellor of Washington University, and his grandfather, William Greenleaf Eliot, was the school's founder. Eliot's major work shows few signs of St. Louis, but there was, in his youth, a Prufrock furniture store in town.
Following his graduation from Harvard University in 1909, T.S. Eliot made his life and literary career in Britain, following the curtailment of a tour of Germany by the outbreak of World War I. After the War, in the 1920s, he would spend time with other great artists in the Montparnasse Quarter in Paris, France where he would be photographed by Man Ray. He dabbled in Buddhism and studied Sanskrit and was a student of G. I. Gurdjieff.
Through the influence of Ezra Pound he came to prominence with the publication of a poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, in 1915. His style was very fresh and modernist.
"Burnt Norton" asks what it means to consider things that aren't the case but might have been. We see the shell of an abandoned house, and Eliot toys with the idea that all these "merely possible" realities are present together, but invisible to us: All the possible ways people might walk across a courtyard add up to a vast dance we can't see; Children who aren't there are hiding in the bushes.

T.S. ELIOT QUOTES
All dash to and fro in motor cars,
Familiar with the roads and settled nowhere.
T.S. ELIOT, The Rock I will show you fear in a handful of dust. T.S. ELIOT, The Waste Land History has many cunning passages, contrived corridors and issues. T.S. ELIOT, Gerontion
I journeyed to London, to the timekept City,
Where the River flows, with foreign flotations.
There I was told: we have too many churches,
And too few chop-houses.
T.S. ELIOT, The Rock The Church must be forever building, for it is forever decaying within and attacked from without. T.S. ELIOT, The Rock
The True Church can never fail
For it is based upon a rock.
T.S. ELIOT, The Hippopotamus
Endless invention, endless experiment,
Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness.
T.S. ELIOT, The Rock I have measured out my life with coffee spoons. T.S. ELIOT, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
The lawn
Is pressed by unseen feet, and ghosts return
Gently at twilight, gently go at dawn,
The sad intangible who grieve and yearn....

With smells of steaks in passageways.
Six o'clock.
The burn-out ends of smoky days.
And now a gusty shower wraps
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about his feet
And newspapers from vacant lots;
The showers beat
On broken blinds and chimney pots,
And at the corner of the street A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps. And then the lighting of the lamps.

THE SECOND-ORDER MIND BY T. S. ELIOT
TO any one who is at all capable of experiencing the pleasures of justice, it is gratifying to be able to make amends to a writer whom one has vaguely depreciated for some years. The faults and foibles of Matthew Arnold are no less evident to me now than twelve years ago, after my first admiration for him; but I hope that now, on rereading some of his prose with more care, I can better appreciate his position. And what makes Arnold seem all the more remarkable is, that if he were our exact contemporary, he would find all his labour to perform again. A moderate number of persons have engaged in what is called "critical" writing, but no conclusion is any more solidly established than it was in 1865. In the first essay in the first Essays in Criticism we read that "it has long seemed to me that the burst of creative activity in our literature, through the first quarter of this century, had about it in fact something premature; and that from this cause its productions are doomed, most of them, in spite of the sanguine hopes which accompanied and do still accompany them, to prove hardly more lasting than the productions of far less splendid epochs. And this prematureness comes from its having proceeded without having its proper data, without sufficient material to work with. In other words, the English poetry of the first quarter of this century, with plenty of energy, plenty of creative force, did not know enough. This makes Byron so empty of matter, Shelley so incoherent, Wordsworth even, profound as he is, yet so wanting in completeness and variety."

Programme Name: Details: Actress And Her Time, An ...Irene Worth has been a leading actress on the international stage for over 50 years. Her career has stretched from T S ELIOT 's `The Cocktail Party' to her current one-woman show about Lillian Gish. In a series of three conversations, she talks to John Miller about her rich life in the theatre.... Another Country ...A series of eight essays in which writers discuss unfamiliar surroundings and experiences. In the first programme, Iain Sinclair leaves behind the familiarity of Hackney to explore themes of exile and asylum on the south coast of ENGLAND. He considers the sojourn in Margate of T S ELIOT , who spent the Autumn of 1921 there recovering from a breakdown and composing `The Wasteland', and in Hastings he meets the photographer Effie Paleologou, whose work is inspired by feelings of alienation. Sinclair contrasts these voluntary artistic exiles with the despair of asylum seekers in the South.... Behind The Book ...Joan discovers that the present owners of T S ELIOT 's flat in London, where he was living at the time of writing the poem, are enthusiastic devotees. And Eliot expert, Professor Lawrence Rainey, and poet, Sam Milne, join Joan as they head towards the City where Eliot worked at Lloyds Bank for many years....
