WordReference Forums English Only English Only PDA View Full Version : Dread/dreaded timpeac 14th July 2005, 08:48 PM In a recent email a collegue talked about "the dread hand of incompetence". This sounded strange to me and I asked him if he meant "the dreaded hand of incomptence" he said no and that "dread" was the adjective not "dreaded". A couple of people near-by agreed with me, so I assumed it was just him having a funny 5 minutes.
Now I see this posted by Pan -
"the dread prospect of searching through "
Knowing that Pan's expression is normally of the highest order, this has now made me question my usage.
Which is correct as an adjective, "dread" or "dreaded".
Personally I have never seen "dread" used in this way before my collegue and now Pan. What do you all think? Markus 14th July 2005, 08:54 PM I agree with you that "dreaded" seems more correct, but I have seen "dread" used as an adjective before. I would say that "dreaded" is definitely a correct usage, but the other might be as well. But I'm no authority, I'm just speaking from the intuition of a mother tongue. Phineas keeps on reading through the documents when suddenly the light goes out. He starts to feel his claustrophobia again. The door out of the strong-room is locked. Page 117
Phineas freaks out and bangs the door, nearing unconsciousness. He slips to his knees and suddenly Fulla Biefeld stands infront if him. He has a good insight underneath her skirt and notices her 'sex'. Page 118-122
Phineas feels better and talks about Destry-Scholes with Fulla. They also talk about her being a bee taxonomist and that there are only 39 left on this world. He gives her a copy of the Swedish documents he can't read for her to go through. As we already know, CL's travels are mostly fictitious. The book presents real and unreal things. Sometimes, it is hard to know if things are real or not. Most of CL's travels are not real, although, in this case, the 'furia infernalis' does exist, even though it sounds very unlikely. And again, this shows how hard it is to find out about truth or untruth. "Furia Infernalis : [Linnaeus] found out that a terrible distemper which sometimes proves fatal in the north of Europe, was occasioned by an animalcule, which he called Furia infernalis."

For what avail the plough or sail, Or land or life, if freedom fail?
BOSTON by: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
(Sicut Patribus, sit Deus Nobis)
HE rocky nook with hilltops three
Looked eastward from the farms,
And twice each day the flowing sea Took Boston in its arms; The men of yore were stout and poor, And sailed for bread to every shore. And where they went on trade intent They did what freeman can, Their dauntless ways did all men praise, The merchant was a man. The world was made for honest trade, To plant and eat be none afraid. The waves that rocked them on the deep To them their secret told; Said the winds that sung the lads to sleep, "Like us be free and bold!" The honest waves refuse to slaves The empire of the ocean caves. Old Europe groans with palaces, Has lords enough and more;
