Fernwood Cemetery Born: August 24, 1843 at Philadelphia, PA Entered Service in the US Army from Philadelphia, PA Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism April 02, 1865 at Petersburg, VA Died: October 08, 1903 at the age of 60 In all, a total of 64 Medals of Honor were earned in action at Petersburg, Virginia, in the period from March 25 to April 3, 1865, fifty-four of them on April 2 alone. Corporal Joseph Fisher was one of seventeen soldiers cited for their heroism as color bearers in this action. He carried the colors fifty yards in advance of his regiment, and after he was painfully wounded, attempted to crawl into the enemy's works to plant his flag on them. | |
