Introduction
Print this section Robert Frost (1874-1963), American poet, who drew his images from the New England countryside and his language from New England speech. Although Frost’s images and voice often seem familiar and old, his observations have an edge of skepticism and irony that make his work, upon rereading, never as old-fashioned, easy, or carefree as it first appears. In being both traditional and skeptical, Frost’s poetry helped provide a link between the American poetry of the 19th century and that of the 20th century. See also American Literature: Poetry II
Life
Print this section Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California, the son of William Prescott Frost, Jr., of New Hampshire and Isabelle Moodie of Scotland. He was named after Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate armies during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Frost was 11 years old, his father died of tuberculosis. The Frost family then moved to Massachusetts, where William Frost wanted to be buried. Frost attended high school in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and began writing poetry. He attended Dartmouth College briefly but withdrew during his first year and went to work. In 1895 he married Elinor White. The couple eventually had six children, two of whom died young. From 1897 to 1899 Frost attended Harvard College, but he left before receiving a degree. In the early 1900s the family owned a small poultry farm in New Hampshire, and Frost taught at a small private school nearby.

Robert Frost: A Late Walk back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
A Late Walk When I go up through the mowing field,
The headless aftermath,
Smooth-laid like thatch with the heavy dew,
Half closes the garden path. And when I come to the garden ground,
The whir of sober birds
Up from the tangle of withered weeds
Is sadder than any words A tree beside the wall stands bare,
But a leaf that lingered brown,
Disturbed, I doubt not, by my thought,
Comes softly rattling down. I end not far from my going forth By picking the faded blue Of the last remaining aster flower To carry again to you. This is one of many bonvibre@aol.com . Robert Frost
Robert Frost was born in San Francisco but moved with his family to Lawrence, Massachusetts after his father's death in 1885. His academic studies at Dartmouth College and Harvard were curtailed by financial constraints. He married in 1895 and after a series of family bereavements moved to Buckinghamshire, England in 1912 to take up farming. During his time in England he became a friend of the pastoral poet Edward Thomas. His first book of verse, A Boy's Will , was published in 1913 and the second, North of Boston , a year later. He returned to the United States in 1915, thereafter devoting himself to poetry. A third book of verse, Mountain Interval , was published in 1916. He gained further recognition with New Hampshire Collected Poems A Further Range (1936) and A Witness Tree (1946), all of which won the Pulitzer Prize. Later works include A Masque of Reason A Masque of Mercy (1947), A Steeple Bush (1947) and In the Clearing (1962). Frost's poetry has a haunting, philosophical quality to it, reflecting his personal solitude and a strong, comforting attachment to nature. The Road not Taken

Frost, Robert Robert Lee Frost, b. San Francisco, Mar. 26, 1874, d. Boston, Jan. 29, 1963, was one of America's leading 20th-century poets and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. An essentially pastoral poet often associated with rural New England, Frost wrote poems whose philosophical dimensions transcend any region. Although his verse forms are traditionalhe often said, in a dig at archrival Carl Sandburg, that he would as soon play tennis without a net as write free versehe was a pioneer in the interplay of rhythm and meter and in the poetic use of the vocabulary and inflections of everyday speech. His poetry is thus both traditional and experimental, regional and universal. His widowed mother, Isabelle Moody, was born in Scotland and her intense Scottish loyalties greatly influenced his work, which combines practicality with mysticism. Learn more about him here!
