He was elected a fellow of Exeter College in 1842 and two or three years later was ordained a deacon. After meeting the Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle, who strongly influenced him and whose literary executor he later became, Froude's religious views began to change; he subsequently manifested a strong anticlerical attitude that culminated in his withdrawal from the ministry in 1872. In 1892, in recognition of his brilliant historical writings, which, like Carlyle's, emphasized the role of the individual in history, Froude was appointed professor of modern history at Oxford. As literary executor for Carlyle, Froude prepared for publication Carlyle's Reminiscences (1881) and Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle (1883).
