OLIVER GOLDSMITH QUOTES
Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774) English essayist, poet, novelist, and dramatist
To the last moment of his breath
On hope the wretch relies;
And e'en the pang preceding death
Bids expectation rise.

Hope, like the gleaming taper's light,
Adorns and cheers our way;
And still, as darker grows the night,
Emits a brighter ray.
OLIVER GOLDSMITH, The Captivity Friendship is a disinterested commerce between equals; love, an abject intercourse between tyrants and slaves. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, The Good-Natured Man
Women and music should never be dated.
OLIVER GOLDSMITH, She Stoops to Conquer It is not easy to recover an art when once lost. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, An Essay on the Theatre The virtue which requires to be ever guarded is scarcely worth the sentinel. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, The Vicar of Wakefield To a philosopher no circumstance, however trifling, is too minute. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, Citizen of the World
Such is the patriot's boast, where'er we roam,
His first, best country ever is, at home.

Oliver Goldsmith
Oliver Goldsmith was born in Ireland, the son of an Anglican clergyman. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. After briefly studying medicine at the universities of Edinburgh and Leiden, he travelled through France, Switzerland, and Italy, supporting himself by flute playing. On arrival in London in 1756 he worked variously as a tutor, medical assistant, and magazine contributor whilst developing his talents as a poet, playwright, and novelist. His writing was greatly admired by literary contemporaries such as Samuel Johnson but his general behaviour was regarded as irresponsible and immature. Johnson wrote of him "No man was more foolish when he had not a pen in his hand, or more wise when he had.". He died prematurely of kidney disease in 1774. Woman

He subsequently wandered through Europe, supporting himself by playing the flute and by begging. Later, in England, he practised medicine, taught, and eventually worked for various publishers, producing literary works to order. As a hack writer, he was the author of translations, books for children, and articles for newspapers and magazines. These anonymous potboilers were characterized by humour, picturesque descriptions, and a graceful style. Among them was a series of letters, supposedly written by a Chinese traveller, describing London, later reprinted as The Citizen of the World (1762). Once Goldsmith’s authorship of this successful series became known in London literary circles, he made many influential friends, including

    Jump to: navigation search GOLDSMITH, Oliver , an eminent poet and miscellaneous writer, was born in 1731, at Pallas , in the county of Longford, Ireland . His father, the reverend Charles GOLDSMITH , sent him, at an early period , to Dublin college , and afterwards, with a view to the medical profession , to the university of Edinburgh. At both these in stitutions, the eccentricity and carelessness of his conduct involved his friends in considerable difficulties; and he was removed to Leyden at the expense of an uncle. After studying at the university for about a year, he left it, with only one clean shirt, and no money in his pocket, to make the tour of Europe on foot, and actually travelled in this way through Flanders , part of France Germany Switzerland and Italy . It was, probably, at Padua that he took a medical degree , as he remained there six months ; but, his uncle dying while he was in Italy, he was again obliged to travel on foot to England , and reached London with a few pence in his pocket.
