Hesiod
Hesiod Description: A poet and rhapsode, Hesiod lived around 700 B.C. Hesiod is always compared to Homer and is one those rare poets whose compositions survive to this day. No one knows who was born first Homer or Hesiod, but some assume they lived around the same time.
Some ancient Greek scholars like Aristarchus argued that Homer was the earlier and many accepted this later. But this claim is doubtful because both these poets existed when no records of history were compiled. So whoever was born first may never be known.
Hesiod claimed himself to be a farmer in Boeotia, an area in Central Greece. His father belonged to Kyme in Aeolis but travelled to Ascra and settled there (described as cursed in his poems). Hesiod's father owned a small piece of land and practised law along with his brother Perses. These details are derived from his works 'Works and Days' and the 'Theogony' but other than this, little of him is known.
Only these famous works 'Works and Days' and the 'Theogony' exist today and some lines of his composition 'Shield of Heracles'. Works and Composition: Only three of the many works of Hesiod are in a good state today. Other remains are fragmented and therefore incomplete. The first edition of 'Works and Days' came out in 1493 compiled by Demetrius Chalcondyles. Along with this composition other works were compiled and published in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1495.

Delacroix, Hesiod and the Muse Enlarged view and more on this theme in art HESIOD PAGES In the mid-1970s I knew little about ancient Greek literature and less of the language itself, but nonetheless had occasion to study the role of the ancient Greeks in the history of science. In doing so I happened upon a statement by the authority George Sarton , to the effect that “Hesiod” was a precursor to the later Presocratic “philosophers,” who for Sarton and others passed for scientists. I had barely heard the name, but soon learned that it is assigned to the two early poems Theogony and Works and Days because the author of the first work calls himself at one point, and because tradition (perhaps supported by study of their style) says that the author of the second was the same person. Be those questions as they may, I got out a copy of Lattimore’s translations at the library and was immediately captivated. Many years later, having learned and published enough of the subject matter to have become accepted in the field, I remain persuaded that the Hesiodic poems have more value to the educated person (expert in matters Greek or no) than is generally acknowledged. This section of the site is devoted to the subject.

Description
The file hesiod.conf determines the behavior of the Hesiod library. Blank lines and lines beginning with a '#' character are ignored. All other lines should be of the form variable value , where the value should be a single word. Possible variables and values are:
lhs
Specifies the domain prefix used for Hesiod queries. In almost all cases, you should specify ''lhs=.ns''. The default value if you do not specify an lhs value is no domain prefix, which is not compatible with most Hesiod domains.
rhs
Specifies the default Hesiod domain; this value may be overridden by the environment variable. You must specify an rhs line for the Hesiod library to work properly.
classes
Specifies which DNS classes Hesiod should do lookups in. Possible values are IN (the preferred class) and HS (the deprecated class, still used by some sites). You may specify both classes separated by a comma to try one class first and then the other if no entry is available in the first class. The default value of the classes variable is ''IN,HS''.

Hesiod (ca. 700 BC)

Greek philosopher who described his cosmology and cosmogony in the Theogeny . Hesiod's explanations of how the gods came about was probably derived from Near Eastern (Babylonian) lore. He created a family tree of gods in which Chaos (the yawning gap) produced Erebus (the Abyss) and Night, who produced Aether and Day. At the same time, Earth produced the Heavens, Mountains, and Sea. The Heavens and Earth then produced Cronos. He also divided the universe into Heaven, Aether, Earth, Erebus, Tartarus, and surrounded it by the Ocean. The difference in levels between Earth and Heaven was called Chaos.
