Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Hughes, Thomas (1822-1896), English author of children's books. Hughes was born in Uffington, and educated at Oriel College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1848, was a Liberal Member of Parliament (1865-1874), and finally a judge at Chester (1882). A Christian Socialist, he helped found the Working Men's College in London in 1854 with his friend Charles Kingsley , and later was its principal (1872-1883). His most famous book, Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857), a fictionalized account of Rugby under the headmastership of Thomas Arnold and the ethos of “muscular christianity”, went through five editions in nine months. Other novels, and biographies, had less success. In 1870 he went to the United States for the first time, and in 1875 bought, with friends, land in Tennessee to establish a model community to be called Rugby. Hughes soon withdrew from the project, although his mother lived there until her death.

REPORTS: PREVIOUS NEXT
I would like to be set into a wooden ship in wales and pushed out to sea. Once in deeper waters I want everyone alive who loves me to fire an incendiary device of their choosing(arrows, molotov cocktails, hot coals) into the boat so that it burns completely and totally. I would like this done on a clear, fall night if possible.
