(December 2006) DNA Replication The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international scientific research project with a primary goal to determine the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up DNA and to identify the approximately 25,000 genes of the human genome from both a physical and functional standpoint.
  • The project began in 1990 initially headed by James D. Watson at the U.S. National Institutes of Health . A working draft of the genome was released in 2000 and a complete one in 2003, with further analysis still being published. A parallel project was conducted by the private company Celera Genomics . Most of the sequencing was performed in universities and research centers from the United States, Canada and Great Britain. The mapping of human genes is an important step in the development of medicines and other aspects of health care.
The project's roots grew from early work on the inheritance of traits, such as those in plants. For example, one famous geneticist

    Version Control
Subversion is a version control system. The SVN book contains all the details. Quoting from http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~comp314/svn.html An important element of the modern software development process is source control (or version control). Cooperating developers commit their changes incrementally to a common source repository, which allows them to collaborate on code without resorting to crude file-sharing techniques (shared drives, email). Source control tools track all prior versions of all files, allowing developers to "time travel" backward and forward in their software to determine when and where bugs are introduced. These tools also identify conflicting simultaneous modfications made by two (poorly-communicating) team members, forcing them to work out the correct solution (rather than blindly overwriting one or the other original submission). I'll walk through how to use subversion with the command-line tools. There are also GUIs like TortoiseCVS for Windows and various IDEs ,like WingWareIDE and Eclipse integrate SVN support.

    More -omics
Genomeweb Daily News has a short -omics story describing the 2-year-old project as one that will “have more immediate impact on medicine and medical practices than the Human Genome Project,” the University of Alberta said researchers have catalogued “2,500 metabolites, 1,200 drugs, and 3,500 food components that can be found in the human body.” Here is the the Human Metabolome Database by Genome Alberta that reports slightly different figures on the intro page (attn HMDB is not identical to the Human Mitochondrial Database!) The database is designed to contain or link three kinds of data: 1) chemical data, 2) clinical data, and 3) molecular biology/biochemistry data. The database currently contains more than 2100 metabolite entries including both water-soluble and lipid soluble metabolites as well as metabolites that would be regarded as either abundant (>1 mM) or relatively rare ( <1 nM). Additionally, approximately 5500 protein (and DNA) sequences are linked to these metabolite entries.

    About
The Human Genome Project was started in 1990 as a joint effort between the United States (the Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health) and researchers in China, France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom, at an estimated cost of (US) $3 billion. A "rough draft" of the human genome was made public in the year 2000, followed by a announcement of a nearly complete sequencing of all human genes in 2003. In May 2006, researchers announced that they had fully sequenced all genes in Chromosome 1 (the largest human chromosome). Current technology limits the ability to decode many parts of the human genome, including the centromeres (repetative centers of the chromosomes), the telomeres (tips of the chromosomes, believed to be controls of cell aging), and some dense areas that appear to produce immunity defenses to disease. It is estimated that 92% of the human genome has been sequenced to date.

The most important features of a DNA molecule are the nucleotide sequences, and the identification of genes and their activities. Since 1920, scientists have been working to determine the sequences of pieces of DNA . This was further extended for the complete sequence determination of genome of certain lower organism’s example plasmid pBR 322 in 1979. The mitochondrial genome was sequenced in 1981. The birth and activity of human genome project The human genome project (HGP) was conceived in 1984, and officially began in earnest in October 1990. The primary objective of HGP was to determine the nucleotide sequence of the entire human nuclear genome. In addition, HGP was also entrusted to elucidate the genomes of several other model organisms. James Watson (who elucidated DNA structure) was the first director of HGP. In 1977, United States established the national human genome research institute. The HGP was an international venture involving research groups from six countries – USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan and China, and several individual laboratories and a large number of scientists and technicians from various disciplines. This collaborative venture was named as international human genome sequencing consortium and was headed by Francis Collins. A total expenditure of $3 billion, and a time period of 10-15 years for the completion of HGP were expected. A second human genome project was set up by a private company – Celera genomics, of Maryland USA in 1998. This team was led by Craig Venter. Very rapid and unexpected progress occurred in HGP with good cooperation between the two teams of workers and improved methods in sequencing.

Laboratory information-management systems, robotics, database-management systems, and graphical user interfaces were among the computing tools required to help genome researchers make sense of this flood of data. A new field of research, bioinformatics, has developed in part to address the computing challenges raised by the project. Researchers in bioinformatics have developed public databases connected to the

By: Anonymous Human Genome Project A genome is defined as the complete collection of an organisms genetic material. The human genome is composed of about 50,000 to 100,000 genes located on 23 pairs of chromosomes in a human cell. It is said that a single human chromosome may contain more than 250 million DNA base pairs, and it is estimated that the entire human genome consists of about 3 billion base pairs. The DNA is gathered through blood samples taken from many different people. Though each person has a unique set of DNA the difference in a given pair of samples is less than 1 percent making the differences pale in comparison to the similarities The Human Genome Project is an international collaboration of scientists who’s goal is to gain a basic understanding of the genetic blueprint of a human being. This information is found in each cell of the body, encoded in the DNA. The intent of this project is to identify all genes in the nucleus of a human cell, to map where those genes are on the chromosomes of the nucleus, and to determine the seqeuncing or the order of these chemical subunits of the DNA The idea to undertake such a project was came about through a series of scientific conferences held between 1985 and 1987. The actual project ,however, did not begin until 1990 with the expansion of funding from the NIH and DOE. There are many nations involved with this project as part of an informal pact including France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and many other european nations. Also in an effort to speed up the mapping and sequencing process several private companies have been enlisted to help such as Celera Genomics
