The Human Genome Project
The U.S. Human Genome Project (HGP) began officially in 1990 as a $3-billion, 15-year program to find the estimated 80,000-100,000 human genes and determine the sequence of the three billion DNA building blocks that underlie all of human biology and its diversity. The early phase of the HGP was characterized by efforts to create the biological, instrumentation, and computing resources necessary for efficient production-scale DNA sequencing. The first five-year plan was revised in 1993 due to remarkable technological progress, and the second plan projected goals through FY 1998. The latest plan was developed during a series of individual and joint Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) workshops held over the past two years. In September 1998, advisory committees at DOE and NIH approved new five-year goals aimed at completing the Human Genome Project (HGP) two years earlier than originally planned in 1990. The target date of 2003 also will mark the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick's description of DNA's fundamental structure.

Paper Abstract:
Examines need for anthropological approach to study of human genetics, focusing on Human Genome Project. Paper Introduction: Genetics, Variation, and Anthropology Introduction For over a decade, researchers in the biological sciences have been collecting data on human genetics in the massive Human Genome Project and other smaller efforts. Scientists in other specialties have begun to examine this database in order to extend the genetic age to other disciplines. Anthropologists, in particular, are interested in human genetics because of what it can tell them about human variation. However, the sources of the data and the various collection methods are sometimes incompatible, and the sheer volume of data available can be overwhelming. Consequently, a new science called bioinformatics has been developed to deal with these questions. This paper assesses the need for an anthropological approach to the study of

July 5, 2000
On June 26, 2000, two teams of scientists made the historic announcement that they have assembled the complete human genome, containing a total of 3.12 billion base pairs of DNA. Celera Genomics Inc., a PE Corporation business in Maryland, and the non-profit international Human Genome Project worked independently to achieve this same result. Dr. J. Craig Venter, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Celera, and Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Institute at the National Institutes of Health, made the announcement last week. Sequencing of the human genome, which involved determination of the exact order of the four chemical bases (A, T, C and G) of long segments of human DNA, was completed in April, 2000. The assembly phase, whereby the location and order of the genetic code was determined, is now completed, and over 38,000 predicted genes have been confirmed. In the next phase, analysis and annotation of the human genome, these located genes will be further analyzed in order to begin understanding their function. Several thousand additional genes will also be identified and subsequently analyzed. It is estimated that there are at least 50,000 genes, and perhaps as many as 100,000 genes, in the entire human genome.
