Thomas Henry Huxley (1825 - 1895)
Huxley was a pioneering biologist and educator, best known for his strong support for Darwin's theory of evolution. Thomas Henry Huxley was born in London on 4 May 1825, the son of a maths teacher. When he was ten, Huxley's family moved to Coventry and three years later he was apprenticed to his uncle, a surgeon at the local hospital. He later moved to London where he continued his medical studies. At 21, Huxley signed on as assistant surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake, a Royal Navy ship assigned to chart the seas around Australia and New Guinea. During the voyage, he collected and studied marine invertebrates, sending his papers back to London. When he returned he found that the papers had been read and admired and in 1851 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1854 Huxley was appointed professor at the School of Mines in London. He met Charles Darwin in around 1856 and was won over by his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin's 'The Origin of Species' was published in 1859. It provoked a storm of controversy because it challenged the Christian belief that God created life on earth. Huxley's repeated and passionate defence of the book earned him the nickname of 'Darwin's Bulldog'. In June 1860 in Oxford, Huxley took part in a famous public debate on evolution with Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford. Wilberforce had been coached by Richard Owen, an eminent Victorian scientist, who was to be Huxley's most significant opponent.

Thomas Henry Huxley
While he was on board the navy ship, Huxley collected and studied samples of quite a few different marine invertebrates. When he returned from his travels on the ship, his studies and research on marine life had won him a place in the scientific community. He soon became acquainted with people like Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker. Origin of Species , Huxley reaction was: "How stupid of me not to have thought of that." Huxley was a brilliant man. He won many awards, including the Royal, Copley and Darwin medals. Many honors were his to claim. These no doubt contributed to his election to the first school board of London. Thomas Huxley was an important man in the scientific community. He wrote many essays and books that reflect his view.

The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. The following year he entered the Royal Navy as assistant surgeon of HMS Rattlesnake. During his tour of duty in Australasian waters, which lasted until 1850, Huxley became thoroughly familiar with the surface animals of tropical seas. His observations on the medusa family of jellyfish led to the recognition of the zoological class Hydrozoa and to the realization that the two germ layers found in members of this class are comparable to the two germ layers that arise in the early embryological stages of higher animals. Returning to England in 1850, Huxley was made a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Royal Navy retained him as a nominal assistant surgeon until 1853; he used this time to write several scientific papers, including an authoritative work on the morphology of cephalopod molluscs. Huxley became Professor of Natural History and Palaeontology at the Royal School of Mines, London, in 1854. He accompanied the Irish physicist John Tyndall on an expedition to the Alps, where they studied glaciation.

When he was twenty years old, he enlisted in the herbs al service of the British Navy and spent four years sailing the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific.

These he sent back to the Royal Society in London. By the time he returned to London in 1850 his scientific reputation was well established.
Huxley retired from the navy when he was twenty-eight years old and became a lecturer on natural history at the Royal School of Mines. In 1883 he was elected president of the Royal Society, a great honor for a British scientist.

ES2217: Biology, Ideology, and Childhood Week 5: Darwin and Darwinism return to module outline, last updated 27.2.07. Introduction These notes are extensive - deliberately so. They represent both a bridge between the two halves of the module and an important set of contextual ideas that form the basis for much of the thinking which will be explored in the second half after Easter. N. B. There is no expectation that in your first assignment you will make any specific reference to this material - although if you find it relevant to your presentation you are of course at liberty to use it. It is often hard to disentangle Darwin from Darwinism during the Nineteenth Century, although the writings of Thomas Henry Huxley will help; and the picture gets clearer in the Twentieth. In general terms, there are two strands of scientific investigation which stem from Darwin's original writings: that studying the fusion of Darwin's thoughts about inheritance and genetic theory, and that comprising what use to be called 'the science of Man.' The fact is that Darwin is still being read profitably in the original and I would urge you to do the same - note that all of the quotations have been taken from Ridley, M. (ed.) (1994)
