to Volume 3 Table of Contents A chain is no stronger than its weakest link, and life is after all a chain. A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. A man has as many social selves as there are individuals who recognize him. Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune. Action seems to follow feeling, but really action and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not. All natural goods perish. Riches take wings; fame is a breath; love is a cheat; youth and health and pleasure vanish. An act has no ethical quality whatever unless it be chosen out of several all equally possible. An idea, to be suggestive, must come to the individual with the force of revelation.

He studied in Europe and earned his medical degree from Harvard University in 1869. He never practiced medicine, partially due to ill health and depression, but in 1872 he joined the Harvard faculty, where he taught first physiology and then psychology. At Harvard he also founded America's first psychology laboratory and, after twelve years, published the Principles of Psychology.
He sought to reconcile empirical, philosophical, and religious ideas through his theory of "pragmatism". This theory held that truth is relative and depends on its effect on human freedom. His well-known "Varieties of Relgious Experience" addressed the psychological aspects of religion. James dealt with basic human issues, which made him a central figure in American thought. Z William James Biography William James (January 11, 1842, New York - August 26, 1910 Chocorua, New Hampshire), philosopher and elder brother of the writer Henry James, was born in New York, son of a Swedenborgian theologian, Henry James, Sr. He received an eclectic and trans-Atlantic education as his eccentric father's son.
Together with Charles Sanders Peirce, who coined the term, James founded the philosophical school or (perhaps more accurately) orientation of pragmatism.
James received his degree in medicine at Harvard, and taught anatomy there from 1872, philosophy after 1882.
He first made a mark with Principles of Psychology (1890), which criticized both the English associationist school and the Hegelianism of his day as competing dogmatisms, of little explanatory value, and which sought to re-conceive of the human mind as inherently purposive and selective.
    Epistemology
James defined truth as that which works in the way of belief. "True ideas lead us into useful verbal and conceptual quarters as well as directly up to useful sensible termini. The lead to consistency, stability and flowing human intercourse" but "all true processes must lead to the face of directly verifying sensible experiences somewhere," he wrote.
Pragmatism as a view of the meaning of truth is considered obsolete in contemporary philosophy, because the predominant trend of thinking in the years since James' death (1910) has been toward non-epistemic definitions of truth, i.e. definitions that don't make truth dependent upon the warrant of a belief.

WILLIAM JAMES QUOTES We are spinning our own fates, good or evil, never to be undone. WILLIAM JAMES, The Principles of Psychology The states of consciousness are all that psychology needs to do her work with. Metaphysics or theology may prove the Soul to exist; but for psychology the hypothesis of such a substantial principle of unity is superfluous. WILLIAM JAMES, Psychology: The Briefer Course Keep the faculty of effort alive in you by a little gratuitous exercise every day. That is, be systematically ascetic or heroic in little unnecessary points, do every day or two something for no other reason than that you would rather not do it, so that when the hour of dire need draws nigh, it may find you not unnerved and untrained to stand the test. So with the man who has daily inured himself to habits of concentrated attention, energetic volition, and self-denial in unnecessary things. He will stand like a tower when everything rocks around him, and when his softer fellow-mortals are winnowed like chaff in the blast. WILLIAM JAMES

William James Well known and remembered among El Monte pioneers for his refined dignity, and also for his unusual knowledge of the early history of California, was William James. While not a long and continuous resident of El Monte, he was widely known throughout the district having lived here at different times during his eventful life. Born in 1844, a native of the state of Arkansas, his father was John M. James, a native of Tennessee and his mother Margaret (Johnson) James of Kentucky, a relative of the oft-mentioned William Johnson, captain of a wagon train coming to El Monte in 1852. When but eight years of age Mr. James came to California with his parents, settling in El Monte in the fall of that year. The father farmed for a few years, south of El Monte, and then moved to the Cuen Ranch, now known as the Old Mill property in San Marino. Later the family moved to San Bernardino, where the father and son engaged in saw mill operations with which, was combined the lumber business. Going to Texas in the early sixties for a few years, he engaged in mule-team freighting.
