    Ben Jonson
Ben Jonson was born in London, the son of a clergyman who died before Jonson's birth, and was educated at Westminster School. After working as a bricklayer for his stepfather and serving as a soldier, he became an actor and playwright. In 1599 he was imprisoned along with other actors for his part in a scurrilous play, Isle of Dogs, and later again for killing an actor in a duel. His volatile nature is reflected in his poetry and plays, which are a combination of satirical humour and scholarly classicism. He became a court poet and masque writer to James I in collaboration with Inigo Jones and is best remembered for his comedy plays Volpene The Alchemist , and Bartholemew Fair . He was appointed City Chronologer in 1628, holding the post until his death in 1637. A Farewell to the World

    Ben Jonson 1572- 1637
Widely known as a roistering actor/dramatist (in 1598 he was branded, having narrowly avoided being hanged, for a killing an actor in a duel), Ben Jonson was also a formidable and influential poet. His epigrams and some of his lyrics based on classic modes are particularly outstanding. Although not officially appointed to the post, the pension of 100 marks a year he received from James I in 1616 made Jonson, effectively, the very first Poet Laureate. A friend of Shakespeare (the bard is thought to have been among the opening cast of Jonson's Every Man in his Humour ), Jonson was the leading literary figure of the Jacobean era. At the Mermaid Tavern, in the City of London, he presided over a circle of playwrights and poets that included John Donne, Francis Beaumont, John Fletcher and Francis Bacon and, later, he attracted a coterie of young admirers who styled themselves as the 'sons of Ben'. A stroke in 1628 left Jonson bedridden for the latter years of his life - a cruel fate for one of literature's more physically active figures. He died in August 1637 and was buried in 'Poet's Corner', Westminster Abbey.

In 1592, after serving briefly with the English army in Flanders, he joined the London theatrical company of Philip Henslowe as an actor and apprentice playwright, revising plays already in the repertory, and apparently taking the title role in Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy. Jonson's first original play, Every Man in His Humour, was performed in 1598 by the Lord Chamberlain's Company with William Shakespeare in the cast. The play used the standard plot of the Latin dramatist, Plautus, adapted for the English stage. Later that year, Jonson killed a fellow actor in a duel and narrowly escaped execution. His next play was Every Man Out of His Humour (1599), an ambitious work that was the longest play ever written for the English public theatre, which failed dismally. These two works were in the same vein. Jonson had invented a kind of topical comedy involving eccentric characters, each of whom represented a temperament, or humour, of humanity (
