HELEN KELLER I am filled with the wonder of her knowledge, acquired because shut out from all distractions. If I could have been deaf, dumb, and blind I also might have arrived at something.
Mark Twain's Speeches
Blindness is an exciting business, I tell you; if you don't believe it get up some dark night on the wrong side of your bed when the house is on fire and try to find the door.
- quoted by Helen Keller, Midstream Mark Twain with Helen Keller Helen Keller has been dumb, stone deaf, and stone blind, ever since she was a little baby a year-and-a-half old; and now at sixteen years of age this miraculous creature, this wonder of all the ages, passes the Harvard University examination in Latin, German, French history, belles lettres , and such things, and does it brilliantly, too, not in a commonplace fashion. She doesn't know merely things , she is splendidly familiar with the meanings of them. When she writes an essay on a Shakespearean character, her English is fine and strong, her grasp of the subject is the grasp of one who knows, and her page is electric with light. Has Miss Sullivan taught her by the methods of India and the American public school? No, oh, no; for then she would be deafter and dumber and blinder than she was before. It is a pity that we can't educate all the children in the asylums.

HELEN KELLER QUOTES We may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all the apathy of human beings. HELEN KELLER, My Religion Our democracy is but a name. We vote? What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real, though not avowed, autocrats. We choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee. HELEN KELLER, letter, 1911 Let pessimism once take hold of the mind, and life is all topsy-turvy, all vanity and vexation of spirit. There is no cure for individual or social disorder, except in forgetfulness and annihilation. HELEN KELLER, Optimism Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement; nothing can be done without hope. HELEN KELLER, Optimism Deep, solemn optimism, it seems to me, should spring from this firm belief in the presence of God in the individual; not a remote, unapproachable governor of the universe, but a God who is very near every one of us, who is present not only in earth, sea and sky, but also in every pure and noble impulse of our hearts. HELEN KELLER

8. The Learning Senses
German, and French history. http//www.twainquotes.com/Keller_Helen.html. Helen Keller became brilliant by learning to focus on her sensory strengths.
http://www.solida.net/sense/learning.html
Make Sense of Your Learning
The Learning Senses
The five senses are sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. These are our major sources for obtaining information about the world around us. However, unless you go to cooking school, the senses of smell and taste are often overlooked in the learning process. With which sensory modality do you learn best? Are you a visual learner? Auditory? Kinesthetic? These are the three senses that most schools utilize in teaching and thus have the greatest impact on our education. The Senses in School
Traditionally, most high school and university courses are presented in a lecture format. One reason for this is because of the information explosion. Every year teachers are required to cover more and more material in the same amount of time. More often than not, creative and artistic teaching methodologies give way to the lecture format. The great thing about lecturing is that it is the most cost effective way to cover lots of information at a fast pace. The worst thing about lectures is that most students don't find them to be a great way to learn. Even auditory learners, those that may have the best chance for success in a lecturing environment, don't always succeed for any number of reasons.
Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan Focus on Your Strengths
One of the greatest examples of focusing on your strengths is that of Helen Keller. She was deaf and blind and had to learn everything through her other senses. Her amazing teacher Annie Sullivan, deserves credit for helping Helen learn through her strengths. How would you describe the concept space and light years to someone without using the senses of sight and hearing? How about explaining concepts like beauty, fun or music? Do it yourself. Try to learn something challenging without being able to see or hear anything about it. Did Helen learn? Mark Twain was amazed at her level of knowledge. Even by the age of 16 she was "brilliantly" passing the Harvard University examinations in Latin, German, and French history.
