Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
Kipling was an English writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is best known for his poems and stories set in India during the period of British imperial rule. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, on 30 December 1865. His father was an artist and teacher. In 1870, Kipling was taken back to England to stay with a foster family in Southsea and then to go to boarding school in Devon. In 1882, he returned to India and worked as a journalist, writing poetry and fiction in his spare time. Books such as 'Plain Tales from the Hills' (1888) gained success in England, and in 1889 Kipling went to live in London. In 1892, Kipling married Caroline Balestier, the sister of an American friend, and the couple moved to Vermont in the United States, where her family lived. Their two daughters were born there and Kipling wrote 'The Jungle Book' (1894). In 1896, a quarrel with his wife's family prompted Kipling to move back to England and he settled with his own family in Sussex. His son John was born in 1897.

Kipling's Childhood
Kipling was born in Bombay, India. His father was John Lockwood Kipling, a teacher at the local Jeejeebhoy School of Art, and his mother was Alice Macdonald. They are said to have met at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire, England, hence Kipling's name. His mother's sister was married to the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and young Kipling and his sister spent much time with the Burne-Joneses in England from the ages of six to twelve, while his parents remained in India. Kipling was a cousin of the three-times prime minister Stanley Baldwin.
After a spell at boarding school, Kipling returned to India himself, to Lahore (in modern-day Pakistan) where his parents now were, in 1881. He began working as a newspaper editor for a local edition and continued tentative steps into the world of poetry; his first professional sales were in 1883.
His Early Travels
By the mid-1880s he was travelling around the subcontinent as a correspondent for the Allahabad Pioneer. His fiction sales also began to bloom, and he published six short books of short stories in 1888. One short story dating from this time is "The Man Who Would Be a King", later made famous as a slightly differently named movie featuring Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

Mark Twain, a Biography
The New York Times
, September 9, 1899
MARK TWAIN ON RUDYARD KIPLING. A letter from Mark Twain addressed to a correspondent in Oklahoma is published in one of the Kansas City papers. It relates to Rudyard Kipling and was called out in an interesting manner. It seems that the students of Stillwater College, in Oklahoma, recently declared that Kipling was entitled to be regarded as the greatest living writer of English. Dr. Henry Walker of Oklahoma City disagreed with this verdict in a letter which he wrote to a paper published in Oklahoma City, and gave that proud eminence to Mark Twain instead. He sent Mr. Clemens a copy of his letter and has received the following reply: "Dear Doctor Walker: I thank you ever so much for the impulse which moved you to write the articleand for the article, also, which is mighty good reading. And I am glad you praised Kiplinghe deserves it; he deserves all the praise that is lavished upon him, and more. It is marvelousthe work which that boy has done the more you read the 'Jungle Books' the more wonderful they grow. But Kipling himself does not appreciate them as he ought; he read 'Tom Sawyer' a couple of times when he was coming up out of his illness and said he would rather be author of that book than any that has been published during its lifetime. Now, I could have chosen better, I should have chosen 'Jungle Books.' But I prize his compliment just the same, of course. I thank you gain and heartily. I haven't the language to say it strongly enough."

Kipling, Rudyard
Rudyard Kipling's popularity has endured several pronounced swings. As a young man he established himself as one of the most respected poets of his day, and was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature at the age of 42 in 1907. His poems and stories remained popular for many years, but as he grew older his reputation steadily declined, largely because of his outspoken imperialism and what was perceived as cultural insensitivity and racism in his writing. However, interest in his work was eventually rekindled and in modern times he has once again secured a place in literary history, though perhaps more for his children's books for than for his poetry or short stories.
Born in Bombay, India in 1865, Kipling was sent to England to be educated when he was six and spent an unhappy childhood at the hands of an abusive caregiver. He was able to leave her house for boarding school when he was 12. In 1881 he returned to India, where his parents still lived, and found work as a newspaper editor and reporter. He soon enjoyed some success in selling his poetry and short stories; By the time he returned to England in 1889, he had built up a name for himself as a writer.
In 1892, Kipling married Caroline Balestier and the couple relocated to Brattleboro, Vermont, where Kipling's wife owned property. He published some of his best work during these years, including the poems "Gunga Din" (1892), "If" (1895) and the children's story

We've fought with many men acrost the seas,
An' some of 'em was brave an' some was not:
The Paythan an' the Zulu an' Burmese;
But the Fuzzy was the finest o' the lot.
We never got a ha'porth's change of 'im:
'E squatted in the scrub an' 'ocked our 'orses,
'E cut our sentries up at Suakim,
An' 'e played the cat an' banjo with our forces.
So 'ere's to you, Fuzzy-Wuzzy, at your 'ome in the Soudan; You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man; We gives you your certificate, an' if you want it signed We'll come an' 'ave a romp with you whenever you're inclined.
