Walter Savage Landor
Walter Savage Landor was born at Ipsley Court and was the son of a doctor. He was educated at Rugby and at Trinity College, Oxford, from which he was sent down in 1794. In 1811 he married Julia Thuillier and three years later moved to Italy, where he lived for some 20 years. After separating from his wife he returned to England and lived in Bath from 1838 to 1858 but spent his last few years in Florence, moving there after a libel action arising from one of his works. A distinguished prose writer, Landor wrote poetry throughout his life, his first work Gebit being published in 1798. Count Julian , a tragedy, was published in 1812 and the Hellenics in 1846/47. He also wrote numerous shorter poems, the most celebrated of which are Ianthe Dirce Rose Aylmer Mother, I cannot mind my wheel , and The Maid's Lament Cursed throughout his life with an irascible, contentious nature, Landor's poetry contains much passion and nostalgia, perhaps a reflection of his own personal regrets. His work was much admired by Robert Browning who helped him in his latter years.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Walter Savage Landor Biography Walter Savage Landor (January 30, 1775 - September 17, 1864), English writer, eldest son of Walter Landor and his wife Elizabeth Savage, was born at Warwick.
He was sent to Rugby School, but was removed at the headmaster's request and studied privately with Mr Langley, vicar of Ashbourne. In 1793 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge. He adopted republican principles and in 1794 fired a gun at the windows of a Tory for whom he had an aversion. He was rusticated for a year, and, although the authorities were willing to condone the offence, he refused to return. The affair led to a quarrel with his father in which Landor expressed his intention of leaving home for ever. He was, however, reconciled with his family through the efforts of his friend Dorothea Lyttelton. He entered no profession, but his father allowed him £150 a year, and he was free to live at home or not as he pleased.
In 1793 appeared in a small volume, divided into three books, The Poems of Walter Savage Landor, and, in pamphlet form of nineteen pages, an anonymous Moral Epistle, respectfully dedicated to Earl Stanhope. No poet at the age of twenty ever had more vigour of style and fluency of verse; nor perhaps has any ever shown such masterly command of epigram and satire, made vivid and vital by the purest enthusiasm and most generous indignation. Three years later appeared the first edition of the first great work which was to inscribe his name for ever among the great names in English poetry.

Landor, Walter Savage Landor, Walter Savage (1775-1864), English poet and prose writer, born in Warwick. He lived abroad, chiefly in Italy, for many years. Though he spent much of his time quarrelling with authorities (he left Rugby School and Oxford University after disagreements with the authorities of these institutions), he managed to win the friendship of a number of literary figures, particularly among the Romantics, including Robert Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Charles Lamb. His first published poetic work was Gebir (1798), an epic in blank verse; one graceful example of his shorter lyrical poems is “Rose Aylmer” (1806). Landor's prose, characterized by a Romantic drive as well as adherence to Classical form, is best represented by Imaginary Conversations of Literary Men and Statesmen (5 vols., 1824-1853).
