Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Leland, Charles Godfrey L eland was an American folklorist, lecturer, and prolific author who wrote several classic texts on English Gypsies and Italian Witches. He was founder and first president of the Gypsy Lore Society. His immersion into Gypsy lore and Witchcraft influenced its revival in the 20th century. He was born August 15, 1824, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, into a family with Puritan heritage. His father, Henry, was a descendant of Hopestill Leland, one of the first white settlers in New England. He died on March 20, 1903, in Florence, Italy. Leland was conscious of the significance of his birth date as it is contributed to the ascension of the Virgin Mary into heaven, and also to the ascension of Buddha. He considered himself fortunate because of this. His niece Elizabeth Robins Pennell in the two-volume biography of him described many details of Leland's life that she wrote in 1906. She shows that Leland's fascination with occultism and folklore started early in life. In the biography's first chapter she writes: In both the "Memoirs" and "Memoranda," he tells how he was carried up to the garret by his old Dutch nurse, who was said to be a sorceress, and left there with a Bible, a key, and a knife on his breast, lighted candles, money, and a plate of salt at his head: rite that were to make luck doubly certain by helping him rise in life, and become a scholar and wizard.

Leland, Charles Godfrey Leland was conscious of the significance of his birth date as it is contributed to the ascension of the Virgin Mary into heaven, and also to the ascension of Buddha. At one time Leland seemed to have suspected that the two women might have been fabricating the material, mostly verses, which they were giving him, but later he seems to change his mind. The biography is full of accounts of Leland's early interest in the supernatural that became his lifelong passion. http://www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/l/Leland_charles_godfrey.html
The Witches Way - Modern Witchcraft Practices
Charles Leland Folklorist and Author whose 19th Century field studies in Italy revealed the existence of a surviving Witch Cult from ancient times. In doing so he asks her how he (the priest) "came to practise our noble profession." Leland seems to be referring to the strega and himself as being part of something which the priest had also joined. At one point Leland mused, in a letter to Pennell dated June 28th, 1889, that Maddalena and Marietta might be inventing various verses and passing them off as something of antiquity.

Charles Godfrey Leland Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903), American poet, humorist, and journalist, best known for his Hans Breitmann’s Ballads, a cycle of poems centered around a German American protagonist. Born in Philadelphia, he attended private schools in his youth before completing his education at Princeton University in New Jersey and the universities of Heidelberg and Munich in Germany. He practiced law until 1853, when he accepted the first of several editorial positions. In 1869 he received an inheritance that freed him for extensive travel abroad, and his subsequent journeys eventually resulted in 60 published volumes. In addition to poetry, humor, translations, fiction, and biography, these books include popular studies of languages and dialects, folklore, peasant arts and crafts, and the occult. In 1857 Leland published his famous long poem, “Hans Breitmann's Barty,” a pioneer work of dialectal American humor, and followed it with scores of poems in which he rendered the eccentricities of behavior and speech of Breitmann, his German-American hero. Leland also published six volumes of sentimental verse and numerous translations, including the Works of Heinrich Heine (German poet) in eight volumes. The 11 volumes of

Summary:
from the PREFACE: As Author of this book, I beg leave to observe that all which is stated in it relative to the customs or peculiarities of Gipsies was gathered directly from Gipsies themselves ; and that every word of their language here given, whether in conversations, stories, or sayings, was taken from Gipsy mouths. While entertaining the highest respect for the labours of Mr George Borrow in this field, I have carefully avoided repeating him in the least detail; neither have I taken anything from Simson, Hoyland, or any other writer on the Rommany race in England. Whatever the demerits of the work may be, it can at least claim to be an original collection of material fresh from nature, and not a reproduction from books. There are, it is true, two German Gipsy letters from other works, but these may be excused as illustrative of an English one. I may here in all sincerity speak kindly and gratefully of every true Gipsy I have ever met, and of the cheerfulness with which they have invariably assisted me in my labour to the extent of their humble abilities. Other writers have had much to say of their incredible distrust of

For the 1978 movie with the same title, see King of the Gypsies (film)
The title King of the Gypsies has been claimed or given over the centuries to many different people. It is both culturally and geographically specific. It may be inherited, acquired by acclamation or action, or simply claimed. The extent of the power associated with the title varied; it might be limited to a small group in a specific place, or many people over large areas. In some cases the claim was clearly a public relations exercise. As the term Gypsy is also used in many different ways the King of the Gypsies may be someone with no connection with the Roma It has also been suggested that in places where they were persecuted by local authorities the "King of the Gypsies" is an individual, usually of low standing, who places himself in the risky position of an ad hoc liaison between the Roma and the gaje (non-Roma). The arrest of such a "King" limited the harm to the Roma.
