Abraham Lincoln Born in Kentucky in 1809, his family later settled in Illinois. He served one term in congress before joining the Republican Party in 1856. His bid for the U.S. Senate in 1858 failed, losing to Stephen Douglas. However, he was elected President as a Republican in 1860. He was determined to hold the Union together. Southerners feared Lincoln's Presidency would end slavery and threaten southern political power. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation after the Battle of Antietam (September, 1862.) Union successes by General's Sherman and Grant helped ensure his re-election in 1864. Lincoln was assassinated by John W. Booth on April 14, 1865, only five days after General Robert E. ARMY United States of America Abraham Lincoln was born on Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin on his father's farm in what was at that time Larue County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He had an older sister, Sarah. In 1816, when Abraham was 7 years old, his parents moved to Perry County in southern Indiana, where his father bought land directly from the federal government. There, as Lincoln later described his life, he was "raised to farm work." His mother died in 1818, and his sister Sarah in childbirth in 1828. From here, Lincoln first traveled on a flatboat to New Orleans. In 1830, when Abraham Lincoln was 21 years old, he migrated with his father and stepmother (Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln) and her children to Logan County, Illinois. After the discouragingly hard winter of 1830-31, the Lincolns started to return to Indiana, but stopped in Coles County, Illinois, where Abraham's parents lived out the rest of their lives.

Abraham Lincoln Born: February 12, 1809 Died: April 14, 1865 Place of Birth: Hardin County, Kentucky Major Notes: Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States and one of its greatest visionaries. He was the second child born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hawks who were poorly educated but excelled in working off the land. Lincoln's father was a carpenter and generally could look after supporting his family. Young Abraham learned to do the chores expected on a frontier and became an expert on using the axe. In 1816 the Lincolns and some of Nancy Hawks' family moved to Pigeon Creek, Indiana. He lost his first mother to milk sick, a disease caused by impure milk, in 1818 but his father remarried to Sarah Bush Johnston a year later. Lincoln's stepmother is credited as encouraging him to read for the sake of knowledge. Lincoln can be said to be self-educated as he had only one year of what could be termed formal education. In 1830, the Lincolns moved to Decatur, Illinois, being encouraged by the Hanks who had already moved to Illinois. Lincoln was hired to work in a small general store in New Salem, near the growing town of Springfield.
