Jack London played an important role in writing fiction because he was one of the first American writers to make an income solely from his writing and it was an income that most would consider very lucrative. Jack London's Call of the Wild and other books allowed London to realize success that many writers could only dream about in his era or in today's world. Jack London was born in 1876. Left behind by his father, Jack was raised by his mother in California. Virginia Prentiss, an ex-slave would help raise Jack because his mother was ill most of the time. There has been some discrepancies in the way that his economic status was perceived. Jack believed and stated often that he was impoverished but historians believe that he was in fact, from a working class family with above average means. William Chaney, the astrologer, was believed to be London's father but there wasn't a legal marriage confirmed to prove that London had any ties to Chaney and paternity is only speculated. Jack married but his first marriage lasted only four years. The couple publicly acknowledged that the marriage wasn't one founded on the concept of love. Jack divorced his first wife and married a woman considered by many as his soul mate. The couple bought a ranch that London loved. He once acknowledged that writing had become, for him, a "way to add three or four hundred acres" to his estate.

London, Jack
One hundred years ago, Jack London was a celebrity. Not only was he one of the most popular and highest-paid novelists of his day, but also he was widely known as a political lecturer, socialist, adventurer, sailor, world traveler, farmer, and charismatic media-magnet. As one of the first authors to use his fame to endorse advertising products, London was comfortable in the spotlight. His books were widely known and continue to be internationally popular today.
London was born in 1876 in Oakland, California to a single mother who eventually remarried. He developed a taste for travel and adventure at a very young age. By the time he started high school, young Jack had already worked in a cannery, sailed for Japan on a sealing ship, traveled around the country and spent 30 days in a New York jail for vagrancy. And that was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventure. His next trip, after high school in 1897, was to the Yukon in search of gold and soon afterward his creative energies poured forth. Returning to California, he began to concentrate on writing, forcing himself to write 1,000 words a day. By 1899 his stories were being published in the Atlantic Monthly and other magazines.
With such an interesting history, it is no surprise that London's personal experiences are believed to have inspired some of his best work.

As a young man in the summer of 1897, Jack London joined the Klondike gold rush. From that seminal experience emerged these gripping, inimitable wilderness tales, which have endured as some of London' s best and most defining work. With remarkable insight and unflinching realism, London describes the punishing adversity that awaited men in the brutal, frozen expanses of the Yukon, and the extreme tactics these adventurers and travelers adopted to survive. As Van Wyck Brooks observed, " One felt that the stories had been somehow lived- that they were not merely observed- that the author was not telling tales but telling his life." This edition is unique to the Modern Library, featuring twenty-three carefully chosen stories from London' s three collected Northland volumes and his later Klondike tales. It also includes two maps of the region, and notes on the text.

JACK LONDON QUOTES I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. JACK LONDON, intro, Jack London's Tales of Adventure There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. JACK LONDON, The Call of the Wild One cannot violate the promptings of one's nature without having that nature recoil upon itself. JACK LONDON, White Fang Show me a man with a tattoo and I'll show you a man with an interesting past. JACK LONDON, 1883

By Jack London The Man with the Gash Jacob Kent had suffered from cupidity all the days of his life. This, in turn, had engendered a chronic distrustfulness, and his mind and character had become so warped that he was a very disagreeable man to deal with. He was also a victim to somnambulic propensities, and very set in his ideas. He had been a weaver of cloth from the cradle, until the fever of Klondike had entered his blood and torn him away from his loom. His cabin stood midway between Sixty Mile Post and the Stuart River; and men who made it a custom to travel the trail to Dawson, likened him to a robber baron, perched in his fortress and exacting toll from the caravans that used his ill-kept roads. Since a certain amount of history was required in the construction of this figure, the less cultured wayfarers from Stuart River were prone to describe him after a still more primordial fashion, in which a command of strong adjectives was to be chiefly noted. One afternoon in April he sat by his door, for all the world like a predatory spider, marvelling at the heat of the returning sun, and keeping an eye on the trail for prospective flies. The Yukon lay at his feet, a sea of ice, disappearing around two great bends to the north and south, and stretching an honest two miles from bank to bank. Over its rough breast ran the sled-trail, a slender sunken line, eighteen inches wide and two thousand miles in length, with more curses distributed to the linear foot than any other road in or out of all Christendom.
