Sir Charles Lyell
Sir Charles Lyell was born in Scotland on November 14, 1797 and died in London on February 22, 1875. He attended Oxford University at age 19. He was knighted for scientific accomplishment in 1848. He became a Baron in 1864. He grew up the oldest of 10 children. Lyell's father was an active naturalist. Lyell had access to an elaborate library including subjects such as Geology. While Lyell was at Oxford, his interests included; mathematics, classics, the legal system (law) and geology. He attended a lecture by William Buckland that triggered his enthusiasm for geology. Lyell originally started his career as a lawyer, but later turned to geology. His zoological skills aided in his extensive studies and observations throughout the world. He became an author of T he Geological Evidence of the Antiquity of Man in 1863 and Principles of Geology (12 editions). Lyell argued in this book that, at the time, presently observable geological processes were adequate to explain geological history. He thought the action of the rain, sea, volcanoes and earthquakes explained the geological history of more ancient times. Lyell rebelled against the prevailing theories of geology of the time. He thought the theories were biased and based on the interpretation of the book of Genesis. He thought it would be more practical to exclude sudden geological catastrophes to vouch for fossil remains of extinct species and believed it was necessary to create a vast time scale for Earth's history. This concept was called uniformitarianism. The second edition of

Summary:
From the PREFACE:
THE LAST or sixth EDITION of my "Elements of Geology" was already out of print before the end of 1868, in which year I brought out the tenth edition of my "Principles of Geology." In writing the last-mentioned work I had been called upon to pass in review almost all the leading points of speculation and controversy to which the rapid advance of the science had given rise, and when I proposed to bring out a new edition of the "Elements" I was strongly urged by my friends not to repeat these theoretical discussions, but to confine myself in the new treatise to those parts of the "Elements" which were most indispensable to a beginner. This was to revert, to a certain extent, to the original plan of the first edition; but I found, after omitting a great number of subjects, that the necessity of bringing up to the day those which remained, and adverting, however briefly, to new discoveries, made it most difficult to confine the proposed abridgment within moderate limits. Some chapters had to be entirely recast, some additional illustrations to be introduced, and figures of some organic remains to be replaced by new ones from specimens more perfect than those which had been at my command on former occasions. By these changes the work assumed a form so different from the sixth edition of the "Elements," that I resolved to give it a new title and call it the "Student's Elements of Geology."

Development of Evolutionary Thought
Evolution and Religion Development of Evolutionary Thought Teaching evolution Teaching evolution can be fraught with difficulty: it is probably the only scientific theory to be rejected on grounds of personal belief. Because of this, it may be that we should move from simply teaching a series of facts and concepts to looking at the development of the theory of evolution, and placing it in its social and historical contexts. William Cobern, who has written a number of papers on the teaching of evolution, has commented (1994) "Teaching evolution at the secondary level - is very much like Darwin presenting the Origin of Species to a public who historically held a very different view of origins." To meet this challenge, "teachers [should] preface the conceptual study of evolution with a classroom dialogue ... informed with material on the cultural history of Darwinism." He goes on (1995, p. 295), "I do not believe ... that evolution can be taught effectively by ignoring significant metaphysical (i.e. essentially religious) questions. One addresses these issues not by teaching a doctrine, but by looking back historically to the cultural and intellectual milieu of Darwin's day and the great questions over which people struggled."

edit History of Geology
The term geology was first used in the late 18th Century. Although geology was not mentioned in the Encyclopedia Britannica before 1800, by 1809 geology had a lengthy entry. During the earliest days of geological study, mainstream scientific geology was divided into three camps: Plutonists, Neptunists and Catastrophists. Of course, the vast majority of all geologists then (as now) were theists, but much of early geology was based upon the biblical history. At that time, the Plutonists believed God created the Earth, but volcanoes and fire had shaped the modern world. At the same time, the Neptunists believed that the ocean, perhaps even the Great Flood, was the primary factor in geology. Catastrophists on the other hand believed that the Earth had been created by God in one great catastrophe. Thus, Catastrophists concluded that everything which we now see was much the same as the world was at Creation . At that time, it was generally presumed by geologists and theologians that the Earth was around six thousand years old. Many Young Earth Creationists still agree with this interpretation.

have uncovered evidence from around the world that the early Dark Ages may have been triggered by an actual event that occurred around 535 A.D
Science writer David Keys GO believes that the cause was a natural phenomenon of cataclysmic proportions. Determined to discover the exact nature of this natural catastrophe, and to understand its political, economic and social repercussions, he embarks on a scientific odyssey that ranges from Greenland to the Antarctica; from the Americas to the Far East.
At the center of a stunningly complex chain of events seems to be "a loud bang" — according to Keys a volcanic explosion equal to

Evolutionary Biology Jump to: navigation search Evolution before Darwin Charles Lyell was the author of Principles of Geology , in which he introduced the theory of uniformitarianism. Charles Lyell lived from 1797 to 1875. Throughout his life, his first love was geology. By using his studies of the Earth, Lyell was one of the first scientists to try and create a time scale for the history of the earth. His book titled Principles of Geology Darwin was very impressed by Lyell’s geologic findings in Principles of Geology. He studied Lyell’s work as he traveled on the Beagle. As he explored the coastlines of South America, Lyell’s book had a great influence on how Darwin looked at the geologic aspects of the land. In turn, many of Darwin’s experiences and findings reinforced many ideas put forth by Lyell in Principles of Geology.

HISTORICAL GEOLOGY 106 Internet Exercise # 1
The Movers and the Shakers in Geology
The main focus of our efforts in ‘Historical Geology’ centers on understanding and getting comfortable with TIME. In our society today, TIME has become compressed: we communicate instantly around the globe; we communicate with spacecraft billions of miles away in minutes; and travel across the continents in four hours. Our politicians think of TIME in terms of four-year or two-year terms, and we budget our spending on fiscal cycles ranging from paychecks every two weeks to paying taxes every year. Unfortunately, our growing sense of “instant gratification” causes us to lose touch with the real TIME. By that I mean DEEP TIME…Millions and Billions of years. DEEP TIME is the common thread that runs through this entire class. We begin our discussion with a look at some of the really important people who helped build the scientific consensus on geologic principles and processes. In fact, this is a history lesson. As you do your research on the internet, keep our main theme in the back of your mind…TIME.
