He was born in Logierait, Scotland. He emigrated to Canada in 1842 after completing an education in public schools at Perth, Moulin, and Dunkeld, Scotland. Mackenzie married Helen Neil (1826-1852) in 1845 and with her had three children, with only one girl surviving infancy. In 1853 he married Jane Sym (1825-1893).
When the Macdonald government fell due to the Pacific scandal in 1873, the Governor General needed to call on someone to form a government as elections were unnecessary. There was no clear leader of the opposition and Mackenzie was the fourth person called upon, and the first to accept, the post of Prime Minister of Canada. He led what was emerging as the Liberal Party from his acceptance of the Prime Ministership in 1873 until 1880. He was Prime Minister until 1878, when the Macdonald Conservatives came back into power after winning a majority in parliamentary elections.
As Prime Minister, Alexander Mackenzie strove to reform and simplify the machinery of government. He introduced the secret ballot; created the Supreme Court of Canada; established the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario in 1874; created the Office of the Auditor General in 1878; and struggled to launch the national railway.

Alexander Mackenzie Canada's second prime minister Alexander Mackenzie, was a nation builder of a literal sort. When he became Canada's first Liberal prime minister in 1873, he brought with him both his stonemason's skill and his democratic principles. Born in Perthshire, Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1842 to follow his sweethart, Helen Neil. Trained as a stonemason, he soon found work in the rapidly growing provinces of Canada East and West. One of his first jobs was to build a bomb-proof stone arch at Fort Henry in Kingston. His next task was working on the Beauharnois Canal near Montreal. Many of the monuments raised by Mackenzie still stand in Ontario; the Welland Canal, the Martello towers at Fort Henry, the Episcopal Church and bank in Sarnia courthouses and jails in Chatham and Sandwich.
While cutting stone on Wolfe Island one winter, he crossed the ice every Saturday night to visit Helen, who was living with her parents in Kingston. One night, Mackenzie arrived half-frozen and soaking wet, haven fallen through the ice in the darkness. But this narrow brush with drowning did not deter the ardent Alexander. He continued his visits, but carried a pole to help him out of the lake!

Introduction
Print this section Alexander Mackenzie (1822-1892), second prime minister of Canada (1873-1878). He succeeded Sir John Alexander Macdonald as prime minister in 1873 and was succeeded in turn by Macdonald five years later. His administration brought a brief interruption in Macdonald's program of nation-building. Scrupulously honest, Mackenzie had many virtues but was not a strong leader of a newly united Canada. He failed to cope with a severe economic depression, to consolidate his country, and to complete a transcontinental railroad. During his cautious administration, Canada marked time until Macdonald's return. II
Early Life
Print this section Mackenzie was born in 1822, in Logierait, Scotland, the third son of a building contractor. Educated at various schools in Perthshire, Scotland, he was apprenticed at the age of 14 to a stonemason. Because there was little work to be found in Scotland, he moved in 1842 to
