Madison, James, Jr.,
Madison, James, Jr., 1771 (1751-1836), statesman and political philosopher, should, by tradition, have attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Most aspiring young Virginia men of his family's station did so. Three influences, however, diverted him. One was his tutor, Thomas Martin, Princeton 1762, who persuaded him of the merits of the young institution in New Jersey. Another was President John Witherspoon's fame, which had begun to spread through the colonies. The third was Madison's family, which had differences with the administration of the Virginia college. So in the summer of 1769 Madison, the eldest of ten children, set out for the College of New Jersey. His work in Philadelphia done, Madison turned to securing the Constitution's acceptance. His efforts toward ratification were essential. His arguments in behalf of the Constitution at the Virginia ratifying convention carried that state for the Constitution, without which the ratification of New York might have been lost and hence the federal union with it. Moreover, his co-authorship, with Hamilton and Jay, of the Federalist Papers

Who was James Madison ?
James Madison was born and raised in Virginia. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1771 and became a lawyer. As a politician, he served in the Continental Congress and the Virginia Assembly. The "Father of the Consitution," was an avid participant at the Constitutional Convention, and wrote some of the Federalist papers, which helped ratify the Constitution. Prior to his own Presidential ascension, Madison was President Jefferon's Secretary of State. As President, Madison was faced with a dilema. Both Britain and France, two of the U.S. trade partners who were also rivals, were attacking U.S. ships on the seas. The War of 1812 began, and was won.

President James Madison
Madison, James BORN March 16, 1751Port Conway, Virginia DIED June 28, 1836-Orange County, Virginia RANKS: President BIOGRAPHY Madison, fourth president of the United States, was elected to the office in 1808, succeeding his friend and mentor Thomas Jefferson as president. He served as chief executive throughout the War of 1812 but displayed little understanding of military matters.
It was while on his watch that the British burned the public buildings of Washington, D.C., on August 24-25, 1814, including the Presidential Mansion (now known as the White House) and the U.S. Capitol. In many ways, Madison can be blamed for this calamity, since he was highly influenced by his egotistical secretary of war, John Armstrong, who up until the last moment kept telling him that Washington could not be a target of the British.
Madison was a shy, serious man who stood a mere 5-foot 4-inches high. In a famous quote, Washington Irving described the diminutive president as "

James Madison At his inauguration, James Madison, a small, wizened man, appeared old and worn; Washington Irving described him as "but a withered little apple-John." But whatever his deficiencies in charm, Madison's buxom wife Dolley compensated for them with her warmth and gaiety. She was the toast of Washington. Born in 1751, Madison was brought up in Orange County, Virginia, and attended Princeton (then called the College of New Jersey). A student of history and government, well-read in law, he participated in the framing of the Virginia Constitution in 1776, served in the Continental Congress, and was a leader in the Virginia Assembly. When delegates to the Constitutional Convention assembled at Philadelphia, the 36-year-old Madison took frequent and emphatic part in the debates. Madison made a major contribution to the ratification of the Constitution by writing, with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, the Federalist essays. In later years, when he was referred to as the "Father of the Constitution," Madison protested that the document was not "the off-spring of a single brain," but "the work of many heads and many hands." In Congress, he helped frame the Bill of Rights and enact the first revenue legislation. Out of his leadership in opposition to Hamilton's financial proposals, which he felt would unduly bestow wealth and power upon northern financiers, came the development of the Republican, or Jeffersonian, Party.

In the consular dispatches sent to the State Department, Madison followed both the progress of the war against Tripoli and the beginnings of the ill-fated French attempt to reconquer Saint-Dominique. On the domestic front, Madison's correspondence was devoted largely to reports on elections and patronage problems as the Jefferson administration continued to consolidate its position. zurück ANB Kontakt var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
