MUIR, John (d.), was b. in Renfrewshire, Scot., May 18, 1804, d. Nov. 16, 1887, age 83. The late Mr. Muir came to Canada from the U.S., in 1842, and set. on the Owen Sound road. He was a cotton spinner, having learned his trade in the old country. At the time Mr. Muir took up his land, Mount Forest had not been started, and the only roads were simply blazed paths. He had very little means, and had to battle with the hardships and privations of pioneer life. He never was in court in his life, and left a reputation of which his children are justly proud. He was one of the best read men in the county retaining what he read. In religion he was a Presbyterian, and in politics a Liberal. On Aug. 31, 1829, he m. Jane Leggat, who d. Feb. 24, 1887, age 76. Issue: Mrs. John Stewart (d. 66); Janet, Mt. Forest; Mrs. John Firk (d. age 53), and John, on the homestead.
John, the only son, inherited half of the homestead, his sister Janet, receiving the other half, which she sold, it being now part of the Murphy estate. John, carries on mixed farming, and is much respected. In 1872, he m. Susanna White, dau. of Thos. White. Issue: Robert, in Hamilton; Mrs. W. Kingston, Hamilton; John (d. 24); Thomas, N.-W.T.; David, at home; Hiram, Winnipeg; Catharine (d. 20), and Mary, and Stanley, at home. | |
