Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949), Indian poet and prominent figure in the Indian independence struggle. Naidu was born into a Bengali Brahmin family in Hyderābād, India. With her father a scientist and her mother a poet, she grew up surrounded by artists, intellectuals, and revolutionaries. A brilliant student, she entered Madras University at the age of 12, about the time she began also to write poetry. In 1895 she was sent to England to study at King’s College, London, and Girton College, Cambridge, before poor health forced her to abandon her studies and return home. During this period, nevertheless, she came into contact with some of the great literary figures of the day, and formed particular friendships with Edmund Gosse and Arthur Symons, whose advice and encouragement helped her poetry to mature. In 1925 Sarojini Naidu became the first Indian woman to be elected President of the Indian National Congress. She took part in the round table conferences in London in the 1930s and, continuing her active participation in Gandhi’s program of

Fille d’un scientifique et d’une po©tesse, elle grandit entour©e d’artistes, d’intellectuels et de r©volutionnaires. ‰l¨ve brillante, elle entre   l’universit© de Madras   l’¢ge de douze ans, et commence   ©crire des po¨mes. En 1895, elle est envoy©e en Angleterre, o¹ elle ©tudie au King’s College,   Londres, et au Girton College,   Cambridge. Sie kam als Tochter einer brahmanischen Familie in Hyderabad zur Welt. Im Alter von zw¶lf Jahren besuchte sie bereits die Universit¤t Madras. Ungef¤hr zur gleichen Zeit schrieb sie ihre ersten Gedichte. Ab 1895 f¼hrte sie ihr Studium in London und Cambridge weiter. Im Anschluss an ihre R¼ckkehr nach Indien 1898 kn¼pfte sie Kontakte mit Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Jawaharlal Nehru Mohandas Gandhi Rabindranath Tagore und Annie Besant . Naidu setzte sich energisch f¼r die Rechte der Frauen sowie f¼r die Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen der Arbeiter ein. 1918, nach dem Tod Gokhales und ihrem Treffen mit Gandhi, wurde sie zu einer wichtigen Anf¼hrerin der indischen Unabh¤ngigkeitsbewegung.
