Thomas Paine's Influence on the American Revolution
by Alison - CTSSAR Winner of the Knight Essay Contest, 2000 "These are the times that try men's soul's. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now , deserves the love and thanks of man and women" These famous words from The American Crisis written by Thomas Paine inspired the American troops to continue their battle for independence from England. This was neither the beginning nor the end of Paine's involvement in the American Revolution.. Prior to this he edited and wrote several pieces for the Pennsylvania Magazine and he wrote the famous pamphlet Common Sense . Paine also served with Washington's army and contributed money to the war effort. Paine once said that he had "a passion of patriotism" (Whitman, Page 630) Paine was born into a poor Quaker family in Thetford, England on January 29, 1737. He attended school until the age of 13 when he was forced to leave and become an apprentice. For the next 24 years of his life, Paine held various jobs. He "spent his spare time and money on books, lectures, scientific apparatus. He read widely but always seriously, worked hard at mathematics, experimented with mechanical contrivances." (Malone, Page 160) In October of 1774, luck finally came to Thomas Paine. In London, he met Benjamin Franklin who encouraged Paine to move to America. Paine took Franklin's advice and immediately moved. In America, Paine wrote for the

When Thomas was nineteen, he went to sea as a merchant seaman. He returned to Great Britain after a short period of time away. He set up a shop in Kent where he became a master corsetmaker. However, his business would later fail. In 1759, he married Mary Lambert who would later die during childbirth taking their child with her. Thomas Paine became an excise officer in Lincolnshire in 1762. He was transferred to Alford and was terminated soon after. He wrote a letter asking for reinstatement and it was granted upon the chance that a vacancy opened. While waiting for the post that he once possessed to be vacated, Thomas Paine worked in Norfolk as a staymaker. He also worked as a servant. He later made application in hopes of becoming an ordained minister of the Church of England. Thomas Paine was later appointed to East Sussex and he moved into the 15th Century Bull House where he would later make the acquaintance of Samuel Ollive and become involved in civic matters. On March 26, 1771, Thomas married Elizabeth Ollive. Paine lobbied for better working conditions and higher pay for excisemen. In 1772, his first article The Case of the Officers of Excise was published and over 4,000 copies were printed.

Z Thomas Paine Biography Thomas Paine (January 29, 1737 - June 8, 1809) is considered to be a "Founding Father" of the United States. As a pamphleteer, Paine had a significant impact upon the American Revolution. He is also notable for his advocacy of Deism and writings regarding the French Revolution.
English by birth, Paine was born in Thetford, Norfolk and raised among farmers and other common people. His formal education was minimal. His major accomplishment as a young man was to be fired twice in four years from his job as collector of excise taxes. His first recorded writing was a short article in favour of better salaries and working conditions. His mother was a member of the Church of England, and his father was a Quaker. There have been some historians who have argued he was strongly influenced in his views by his father. In his deistic tract Age of Reason, Paine writes:
The religion that approaches the nearest of all others to true Deism, in the moral and benign part thereof, is that professed by the Quakers... Though I reverence their philanthropy, I cannot help smiling at the conceit, that if the taste of a Quaker could have been consulted at the creation, what a silent and drab-colored creation it would have been! Not a flower would have blossomed its gayeties, nor a bird been permitted to sing.
Paine advocated a liberal world view, which was radical at the time. He had no use for royalty, and viewed government as a necessary evil. He opposed slavery and was an early supporter of social security, public education and many other ideas that came to fruition decades later. He was a Deist and outspoken critic of organized religion.

    Life in England
Print this section Paine was born in Thetford, Norfolk, England, to an Anglican mother and a Quaker father. He remained poor throughout his life. At the age of 13 he began working for his father, and at 19 he went to sea. Paine returned to England shortly thereafter and moved through various jobs, eventually becoming an excise officer. As an officer he had to collect taxes from smugglers he tracked down. He was dismissed in 1772 for publishing a document calling for an increase in wages as a means of reducing corruption in government service. His personal life did not fare much better: his first wife died and he later legally separated from his second wife.

THOMAS PAINE QUOTES Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is none more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory in itself, than this thing called Christianity ... it produces only atheists and fanatics. THOMAS PAINE, The Age of Reason THOMAS PAINE, The Age of Reason No nation ought to be without a debt. A national debt is a national bond; and when it bears no interest, is in no case a grievance. THOMAS PAINE, Common Sense The burden of the national debt consists not in its being so many millions, or so many hundred millions, but in the quantity of taxes collected every year to pay the interest. If this quantity continue the same, the burden of the national debt is the same to all intents and purposes, be the capital more or less. THOMAS PAINE, Rights of Man

French Career In France Paine was elected a deputy to the National Convention, and he generally voted with the Girondins. By favouring the exile, rather than the execution, of King Louis XVI, however, he offended Maximilien de Robespierre, the leader of the radical faction, and he was imprisoned for 11 months until Robespierre's downfall in 1794; he then regained his National Convention seat. That year Part I of his book The Age of Reason was published; Part II appeared in 1795 and a portion of Part III in 1807. Although it favours deism while opposing both atheism and Christianity, the book gained him a reputation as an atheist and alienated most of his old friends. Paine eventually became disgusted with French politics and concentrated on the study of finance until 1802, when he returned to the United States in a ship placed at his disposal by President Thomas Jefferson. He died in New York on June 8, 1809, having been largely shunned or ignored during his final years. "Paine, Thomas," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2007
