Before the soul can see,
the harmony within must be attained,
and fleshly eyes be rendered blind
to all illusion. Before the soul can hear,
the image (Man)
has to become as deaf
to roarings as to whispers,
to cries of bellowing elephants as to the silvery buzzing of the golden fire-fly. Before the soul can comprehend and may remember, she must unto the silent speaker be united, just as the form to which the clay is modelled is first united with the potter's mind. For then the soul will hear, and will remember. And then to the inner ear will speak the voice of silence. Introduction to the Yoga Sutras
The greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy is the YOGA SUTRAS by Patanjali, thought to have been written in the second century BC. These "threads" on yoga or union are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely essential points. The text may be explained and interpreted by commentaries or a teacher. Yoga practice is considered complementary to the Sankhya philosophy, the goal being the realization of freedom in Spirit from the world of Nature.
This psychological method of liberation is called raja or royal yoga or the yoga of the eight steps, which may be listed as follows: 1. Restraint: nonviolence, not lying, not stealing, not lusting, and not possessing;
2. Observances: cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender to the Lord;
3. Posture or physical exercises;
4. Breath control;
5. Sublimation or withdrawal from the senses;
6. Attention;
7. Concentration;

Patanjali holds a unique position in the line of great Indian sages and benefactors of mankind. He is venerated in Indian tradition as the author of classical treatises on medicine, grammar and Yoga. These three sciences effect the purification of the human body, speech and mind.
He is said to be an incarnation of the serpent Ananta (meaning "the Infinite One") on whom Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the world, rests in slumber before the beginning of creation.
Patanjali was born to a saintly woman called Gonika who had spent her life in spiritual pursuits.He fell into her cupped hands in the form of a tiny snake as she was offering an oblation of water to the Sun.Hence he was named Patanjali, from pata, meaning snake of fallen, and anjalli, meaning hands folded in prayer. He is depicted iconographically with a man's torso and the coiled tail of a serpent.

The Influence of The Invocation To Sage Patanjali
Patanjali is widely believed to be the father of Yoga. At the very least, he is certainly the "father" of most of the way yoga is practised today, with the Invocation to Sage Patanjali central to most types of yoga, whether it is openly acknowledged or not. But whether that reflects the way yoga was originally intended, is another thing. His most famous book " The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali ", was written in approximately 300-500 B.C. In 196 sutras or aphorisms, Patanjali states what Yoga is - "the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind"; and what Yoga does - "perfect firmness of the body, steadiness of intelligence and benevolence of spirit". Yoga practitioners paying respect (and acknowleding their beliefs, lineage, and asscoiations) through the invocation to Sage Patanjali has been likened to musicians earning royalties. Just as a musician gets paid money by people for the right to use their music, Iyengar Yoga practitioners pay "homage" to Sage Patanjali in return for (in their perspective) benefiting from his teachings and wisdom. Perhaps the curency is not money, but a quotia of life force energy instead. Iyengar yoga is not the only type of yoga to use the invocation to sage Patanjali, however. Desikachar cites Patanjali as a central influence, and Kriya yoga are fairly quiet about their associations. Iyengar, Desikachar, Ashtanga, and a few other types of yoga came out of Krishnamarcharya's teachings, for whom Patanjali was an important influence.

What is Astanga Yoga?
(not to be confused with Shri Pattabhi Jois' system of Hatha Yoga) One may assume that Iyengar yoga is simply gymnastics and deep breathing. Asanas and pranayama, however, are part of a much larger practice called Astanga yoga. Astanga yoga is the term given by the philosopher/sage Patanjali, about 2,000 years ago to describe eight limbs of a path toward union of the Atman (individual soul) with Brahman (universal soul). The practice of asana and pranayama are just two aspects of the eight limbs of Astanga yoga. The other six steps are: Yama (social ethics); Niyama (personal discipline); Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal); Dharana (concentration); Dhyana (meditation); and Samadhi (bliss). Asana and pranayama are critical to the path because it is believed that mastery of the body leads to mastery of the mind. The intensity and depth to which Iyengar yoga is practiced on the physical level produces a shift in the student's mind and spirit. That intensity is due to the demand that the whole body and mind be involved in performing asana and pranayama. Iyengar's method facilitates this process in the following ways:
  • Students learn to bring awareness to all parts of their body at once, thus the mind becomes alert, attentive and sharp.

About Yoga Sutras and its author
Patanjali , the author of the Yoga Sutras treatise is largely believed to have lived around year 200 B.C.E. Based on the comparison of the Sanskrit style of text, scholars like Dasgupta, Liebich, Garbe identify the author of YS to be the same Patanjali , the grammarian, author of Mahabhasya , a treatise on grammar. Other scholars like Woods and Jacobi believe that there was another Patanjali who has written the work around the 5th c. C.E or later. The issue of Buddhist influence and interpolation is also considered by scholars like Keith A. B. and Hauer. (Eliade,1954, p. 363). The best known first English versions were done by Woods (The Yoga system of Patanjali , Harvard Oriental Series, 1914) and Rama Prasada Patanjali ,s Yoga Sutras , Allahabad, 1910). ( Ibid ., p. 364).
YS , usually translated as Yoga Aphorisms , set the foundation of Raja Yoga , the 'Royal Yoga', a classical of Yoga systems. The well-known work is usually addressed as Ashtanga Yoga , the Yoga of eight steps/ limbs (Skr.

Discipline is the basis of meditation and yoga. The word "Anushasan" also means discipline and regularity absolutely necessary for success in any human endeavour. Commentary: Sri Patanjali began by the term atha which means now or at this time, I will do something. He took the task of giving the explanation of yoga and its practice, because before this time such an explanation was not laid out in an academic way. He gave the syllabus for yoga, thus breaking the monopoly of all those teachers who mastered yoga and who taught it to their students bit by bit over the years. Whatever Sri Patanjali would say would be standard. It cannot be changed merely by a difference in philosophy. Just as a gasoline combustion engine manufactured in Japan will be quite similar to one manufactured in German, so yoga practice will be the same everywhere, because the human body is the same in each case, and the way of changing the subtle form which produced that gross one is also the same.

    Pantanjali 's life story is somewhat unknown, leaving many details unexplained and disputed. Pantanjali was born to Atri and Anusuya; both masters of Ashtanga yoga. The details surrounding his birth have assumed mythical dimensions. It is said that in order to teach yoga Pantanjali fell from the heavens in the form of a little snake, and fell into his virginal mother's open palms. His most known accomplishment is the compilation of the Yoga Sutras, a major work which contains aphorisms on the philosophical aspects of mind and consciousness, and is the assumed writer of work on the ancient Indian medicine system. Recently Yoga Sutra has become popular worldwide for the precepts of Raja Yoga, and also the philosophical basis of the Yoga movement, which aids in the health of harmonizing of the bodymind.

    The Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali and The Cloud of Unknowing : A Preliminary Step in Assessing the Ontological Accuracy of the Mystical Experience (1996)
    Mark I. Vuletic
    This paper was written for a seminar in mysticism taught by Neal Grossman at The University of Illinois at Chicago in Spring, 1996 Proponents of mysticism sometimes offer the alleged uniformity of mystical experiences across time, distance, and culture as evidence of the epistemological value of the insights into reality one supposedly acquires from having such an experience. Obviously, to assess the claim to its fullest extent would require a thorough examination of all representative mystical texts - far beyond the scope of a single paper - and a detailed consideration of several epistemological issues regarding criteria of evidence and parsimony. However, a preliminary step towards full assessment can be made through consideration of two representative mystical texts from as radically different cultural contexts as can be found, and a survey of some of the epistemological issues involved in assessing what kind of evidence, if any, they offer for the ontological accuracy of the mystical experience. This paper will attempt to offer just such a preliminary analysis. The first text I will consider is a collection of yoga sutras
